It amazes me from the video how people just go about their business virtually ignoring that they are in a Typhoon!

Because of the loop 50 knot winds (and no doubt typhoon force winds) will linger over the area much longer than was forecast.

That's well over 12 inches of rain in large swaths of the island in just 21 hours.

Highest precipitation total so far is for Tai Shan in Ilan at 1005mm according to James.

At its biggest, Krosa was still smaller than Lekima at its biggest. Lekima was about 650 km at its largest I think.

Doug - that 104 mph gust(unclaibrated) was the right front Quad as Rog and I approached the eye from the North down the East coast road. This typhoon surprised us both with the loop the loop track along with ourselves not being able to visually get a handle on the storm (due to the non wind direction shifts at our locations etc).



Overall (now that I have seen the radar loop) I give this intercept a 6/10 for a sucess factor. There were many logistical issues to over come, above and beyond a normal GOM Hurricane intercept due to the location being Taiwan. Data again was everything(as always) and it was only after connection with my UK cell phone of all things via a UK ISP that we got data on the road in (Many $$$ per Mb download - I dread the bill!)



However what is incredible is that just 6 hours after sampling the near eye I am in a hotel in the West of the country having a really nice meal and a beer - never have i done this before during a tropical intercept.

Lessons learned - well IMO there was NOTHING down the North East side of the island that offered any real shelter from CAT4 winds - nothing that any of us on S2K would regard safe anyway -perhaps I am wrong ??

Taiwan *seems* a safe chase country as far as the locals go - no problems with police (who were sincerely interested in our equipment and purpose) Many outlets to purchase food and supplies etc. Credit cards accepted most places.

No mandatory evacuations or road block hassles at all.

What tainted the intercept - Arriving with just 10% battery on my still camera – and realising that the charger was left at home in the UK – hence no stills

Video camera got the “water ingestion” message of death – hence not video.

Lack of any good SUV hire cars – we ended up in a family saloon!

Food – when it is good it is very good – when it is bad is well …. Bad !!

Finally beware the local snacks! – for example in the hotel on the first night they supplied a packet of Peanuts and FISH! combined – I did not try them.

Would I do it again? – YES – but with the know age gained on this trip I will be wiser next time.
