Re: Total Solar Eclipse (August 21) (100% dark from Oregon to South Carolina)

Monday, August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will track from the Pacific to the Atlantic. The shadow of the moon will track over parts of the following states: Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, and South Carolina. The total eclipse will begin near Newport, Oregon at 1:16 PM EDT and will end near McClellanville, South Carolina at 2:48 PM EDT.  A partial eclipse will occur for the rest of the United States. Such an event will not happen at this scale again until 2045.

I also love this map here as well. It is a very good illustration of the path of totality, which will move diagonally from northwest to southeast through South Carolina, especially the centerline of the path, where the longest durations of totality will occur. The centerline will be just west/southwest of Downtown Columbia, in the community of Gaston, SC. The centerline will then pass directly over Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie, then moves over McClellanville as the eclipse reaches its end point just before 3:00 p.m. over the CONUS on August 21 . Also, for those in the upstate of South Carolina, Clemson University sits directly on the centerline and would be perfect for viewing there. Charleston proper sits on the extreme southern edge of the path, so the duration of totality will be shorter there. I will go to either Columbia or to McClellanville to view the total eclipse. I am leaning toward McClellanville for the obvious proximity to Jax, by about 40-50 miles, as opposed to going up near Columbia.

It will be an awesome spectacle, one which will leave a lasting experience of a lifetime indeed. I just hope the weather will hold up for the event.

The hotels and fairgrounds in Oregon are filling up their reservations months away from the event.

Here are interesting facts:

1st total eclipse on US soil since 1991
1st on mainland since 1979
1st coast-to-coast since 1918

The centerline will pass almost directly over my head if I stand out in my yard. I could drive 10 miles or so and it would. Or I could drive 40-50 miles and be under the 'Greatest Eclipse' point.

But it's on a Monday, and you know what they say about rainy days .....

Oh and here's NASA's interactive map: https://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEgoogle/ ... oogle.html

:uarrow: Well, that is wonderful for you to not have to travel, where ever you are within the path of totality. You are among the very fortunate in this aspect.

I was just a very young kid for the last eclipse I experienced close to Jax area and extreme Southeast U.S. The path of complete totality had just missed the Jax area to our northwest for that event in 1970 . Areas like Valdosta, GA and locales to the northeast within that path got treated for that event.

Here was the path for the March 7, 1970 event:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... Mar07T.png

So, I definitely have planned to make the 3.5 hour drive up I-95 and then over to U.S. Hwy 17 up to Charleston and to McClellanville for quite sometime now. The eclipse is simply spectacular to witness, and well worth it to invest taking off a Monday from work to drive up the road to get the full experience of complete totality. These total solar eclipse events are very rare to occur across the continental United States, as this has been well discussed and documented over the course of nearly four decades now. This will be the first total eclipse visible for the continental United States since 1979.

The sun will be about 90% covered here in Jacksonville, similar to what is was during the March 7, 1970 eclipse. The partial eclipse is a unique experience as well, but nothing would beat the full effects of being in the path of totality. The weather in August obviously is a huge wild card though. I am having all positive thoughts for August 21 weather-wise. 8-) (fingers crossed!!) Just hoping that Mother Nature will take it easy on us that day and gives us a great day for viewing!!!

Fred Espenak is a retired American astrophysicist renowned for his studies and work on eclipse predictions.
He was employed at the Goddard Space Flight Center, where he used infrared spectrometers to measure the atmosphere of planets in the Solar System. He provided NASA's eclipse bulletins since 1978. He is the author of several canonical works on eclipse predictions, such as the Fifty Year Canon of Solar Eclipses: 1986–2035 and Fifty Year Canon of Lunar Eclipses: 1986–2035,both of which are standard references on eclipses. The first eclipse he saw was the solar eclipse of March 7, 1970, which sparked his interest in eclipses, and he has since seen over 20 eclipses. Nicknamed as "Mr. Eclipse", Espenak retired in 2009.

The link below from Espenak provides an excellent wealth of information concerning the Great American Eclipse of 2017, which will occur on August 21. Overall, this information is for everyone interested in viewing the total eclipse. This link also focuses on the path of totality, with an emphasis for people residing in South Carolina, or planning to travel there to view the eclipse.

This is a great link provided below showing the driving times over the continental lower 48 United States as it relates to reaching the path of totality for the solar eclipse. They are estimating as many as 180 million people to witness the majestic spectacle, including yours truly on August 21.

Very tricky to plan for this trip as I don't own a car (typical poor college student). Think I'll fly into Atlanta and hitch a ride with some family to see the eclipse in north-Georgia. Alternatively, I'll fly into either Charleston or Columbia, SC, or maybe even Nashville, TN and book a hotel in a favorable position relative to the eclipse. Looks like most of my options are all in the SE CONUS, which is bad if there's a major weather system moving through the area. The eclipse also falls on the first day of the semester, which is somewhat of a pain-in-the-rear, but I'm not missing this.

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

@NationalEclipse Although totality will be relatively short on 8/21, the partial phases of the eclipse will last about two and a half to three hours.
