AMPL - TSUNAMI AMPLITUDE MEASURED RELATIVE TO NORMAL SEA LEVEL.

VALUES ARE GIVEN IN BOTH METERS(M) AND FEET(FT).
PER - PERIOD OF TIME IN MINUTES(MIN) FROM ONE WAVE TO THE NEXT.

EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS CONFIRM THAT A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED
WHICH COULD CAUSE DAMAGE FAR FROM ITS SOURCE. AUTHORITIES SHOULD
TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS THREAT. THIS CENTER
WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT
AND SEVERITY OF THE THREAT.

A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND CAN VARY
SIGNIFICANTLY ALONG A COAST DUE TO LOCAL EFFECTS. THE TIME FROM
ONE TSUNAMI WAVE TO THE NEXT CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO AN HOUR, AND
THE THREAT CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AS MULTIPLE WAVES ARRIVE.

FOR ALL AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS
AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT
OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME
THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN
CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL
CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE
ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AT FORECAST POINTS
WITHIN THE WARNING AND WATCH AREAS ARE GIVEN BELOW. ACTUAL
ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE TIME BETWEEN
SUCCESSIVE WAVES CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO ONE HOUR.

Re: 8.8 Earthquake in Chile, Tsunami WARNING/Watch Posted

#148 Postby Stephanie » Sat Feb 27, 2010 8:51 pm

I'm glad that the tsunami warnings/advisories have all been cancelled with the exception of Russia and Japan. Hopefully, StormingB81, the anticipated height in Japan won't be any higher.

It's like we're seeing a redux of Haiti and the swarm of earthquakes around the Caribbean rim and in Oklahoma of all places again. Strange...

It's like we're seeing a redux of Haiti and the swarm of earthquakes around the Caribbean rim and in Oklahoma of all places again. Strange...

They don't expect it to be any bigger then 3 ft. I mean yesterday when we had our 7.0 which I may add is an experience..lol our water levels only rose by like 3 inches..yes 3 inches..lol so Im not to worried but I will not be at the beach today. Funny thing is they tell us to evacaute the beach..ok really we are on an island and the point I am at it is like 8 miles across..lol can't go far..Fun when a typhoon comes. But thanks for asking I appreciate it!

Re: 8.8 Earthquake in Chile, Tsunami WARNING/Watch Posted

#157 Postby jinftl » Sun Feb 28, 2010 7:50 am

CBS news clip showing the devastation that the 1960 Chile quake (magnitude = 9.5) and resulting tsunami caused in the very same places that were under the gun yesterday. As the video clip shows, in the 1960 tsunami, Hilo was hit by a 35 foot wave that smashed 1600 houses to pieces and killed 185 people. Japan received 18 foot waves that caused millions of dollars in damage. Major damage occured in parts of California even. Watching this video, it is no wonder that these same places were placed under tsunami warnings yesterday and evacuations and precautions had to be taken.
