Sorry I just posted this in it's own subject by accident. Will delete the other one
I just called my farm (http://www.kamokapearl.com) in the Tuamotus and was told by my friend there that Rapanui (Easter Island) had 60cm of swell. They were alerted at 1AM whereas we were alerted at 4. He told me that I could turn my computer off and that if I needed any other news, to just call him.

Well, hopefully that's a good sign.

Not really, the first wave usually is not the largest one and I believe in the 2004 Tsunami the first wave wasn't even that high (in some areas).

I was thinking the same thing. I'm curious to know if there will be cameras set up in the path and scientific instruments on Hawaii.

if anyone else is watching the CNN coverage of this earthquake, anyone notice how the pairing up of Rick Sanchez and Fredricka Whitfield is really not going that well... she looks most uncomfortable working alongside him..and hes really hogging the coverage. I dont know if its me.

I like both these CNN anchors, but clearly the 2 of them together isnt working

The Marquesas are reporting some serious damage. Boats sunk and structures fallen but still little info. Four meters is looking like the height they are dealing with. They are still waiting on the fourth wave in the series. Here in Tahiti we don't seem to be getting it. Seems to have been directed more northwardly. Am wondering how Hawaii will fare.

I didn't notice it but I wasn't paying much attention to it either. I was watching the coverage early this morning when it first broke and they seemed to get a few things mixed up and wrong. They first said this earthquake is 1000X stronger than the Haitian earthquake and now they are saying it's 500X. One said near 900X. Which one is correct?

The number that is more correct than the other numbers and is defined by the value of "x", when subtracted by "y" plus the density of "z", where...nevermind  Honestly I do not know, I'm not sure what the differences are for earthquakes (whereas the pressure of wind is squared).

Here I am. Thankfully there are no reports of damages in El Salvador coast, the seas are normal and there was no important variation in the waves.

The official death toll in Chile has reached 147 according to the ONEMI (chilean emergency management agency)

So far, what places have suffered damage because of a tsunami? I know about the Juan Fernandez Islands and the Marquesas, are there any other places that have confirmed damages due to a tsunami?

From what I am hearing on the news, there are many variables that go into calculating the magnitude...including length of fault slippage, depth of the epicenter, ground/soil type, to name a few. Even the location of aftershocks can result in the magnitude being adjusted some because if future aftershocks occur further away from the epicenter than any that already have occurred, that could indicate the length the fault slipped is greater than originally thought, resulting in the magnitude being adjusted up some.

Basically, the scientist on tv explained that moving up 1.0 points in magnitude, i.e., a 7.0 to an 8.0 magnitude quake equates to a 32 times increase in intensity. The difference between a 7.0 and 9.0 would be 32x32= 1024 times stronger! Since the quake in Chile was an estimated 8.8, and the scale is exponential, not linear, that is what may be causing the different estimates of how much stronger this quake was the one in Haiti.

Keep in mind, the quake in Haiti was practically centered under a extremely high population area with very poor building standards. The center of the Chile quake was offshore and the overall region is not as densely populated and has much better building standards than Haiti.
