Dome has grown more

Image

http://www.mvo.ms/

Views of the dome obtained during the week indicate that dome growth has resumed at the volcano. The new growth was first observed on Monday 11 January 2010. The area of growth appears to be the top, central part of the dome. A well-developed chute towards the northeast is currently focusing most of the rock falls and pyroclastic flows associated with dome growth, into the Whites and Tuitts Ghaut. However, some material is spilling into Gages Ghaut with smaller amounts into Tyers Ghaut.

Re: Soufriere Volcano at Eastern Caribbean continues active

Luis, has there been any effects on any of the other islands? It appears from the latest posts you have made that all if not most of the ash is going out over open waters. Is that correct?

It depends on the wind direction when the nearby islands get the ash plume. If it blows from the SE or south Puerto Rico,U.S. and British Virgin Islands and northern Leewards gets that.Right now the wind is from east to west so it stays in the Caribbean Sea.

From the graphs that you are providing, you can definitely see the shifts in the wind direction.

I wonder if this recent activity at this volcano was a precursor to the Haiti earthquake.

That to some would be a stretch since the two aren't on the same fault(I presume), yet I find it an intriqing question since I am of the thought that all of the earthquakes and volcanoes around the world are in some way tied together/9not necessarily one to the other but overall). I wonder if any studies have been done concerning this?
