The Caribbean plate that joins with the Southamerican plate causes this region to be one of the most active seismic regions in the world.Just NE of Puerto Rico is the Sombrero fault that produces many tremors every day that people dont feel them.Sometimes that fault and the Mona passage fault causes above 4.0 ones.

Good news is that first reports so far say of no damage nor fatalities.Hopefully that is the only report and not see further updates on the contrary.

CARACAS - A 5.6 magnitude earthquake hit Venezuela near the small Caribbean coastal town of Carupano, the United States Geological Survey said Friday.

Initial USGS reports had put the quake at 5.7 magnitude.

The quake, at a relatively shallow depth of 7.3 miles, happened 24 miles southwest of Carupano and was felt in Puerto La Cruz, where state oil company PDVSA has a refinery.
