Shocking footage ...fatalities.

Prayers for the ones lost, those still trapped, the injured and their loved ones.

Words fail at a time like this.

One wonders how much more NZ can endure.

For those of you wondering why this earthquake was so deadly despite only being a 6.3, it's because this quake struck inside the city limits and at a depth of only 3.1 miles underground. The 7.1 last year was centered 35 miles northwest of the city and was further underground as well, at a depth of 7.5 miles. Although they have many skilled engineers and building inspectors who likely kept the structurally unsound buildings from being reinhabited after the 7.1, I'd imagine every building in the city was at least a bit less stable at the onset of this earthquake. It's a very sad situation and I don't know what they will do after this in Christchurch.

No rescues since Wednesday, it's looking more and more likely that the final death toll will exceed 300 and this will be New Zealand's deadliest natural disaster in history, surpassing the Hawke's Bay EQ of 1931.

USGS puts it outside several miles SE of city center: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=-43.5834+172.7012(M6.3+-+SOUTH+ISLAND+OF+NEW+ZEALAND+-+2011+February+21++23%3A51%3A42+UTC)&ll=-43.5834,172.7012&spn=2,2&f=d&t=h&hl=e

"The city of Christchurch is located at the coast of the Canterbury Plains adjacent to an
extinct volcanic complex forming Banks Peninsula. Most of the city was mainly swamp,
behind beach dune sand, and estuaries and lagoons, which have now been drained (Brown etal., 1995). The landforms in Christchurch and the environs are shown in Figure 1."

Two more aftershocks of 5.5 and 6.0 have shook
the Christchurch area of South Island New Zealand.
obviously more damage from already stressed buildings
will be a big danger and liquifaction is very evident.
