Re: 8.9 earthquake hits Japan, tsunami hits coast

Pacific Tsunami Warning Center now has a Pacific wide tsunami warning out. The warning includes all WPAC shore areas and islands and also includes HI, Mexico, and Central and South America as well as South Pacific islands including American Samoa. AK and the US west coast is not yet included in the warning. The fault where the main shock occurred is a classic subduction zone megathrust fault hence the high magnitude. Major damage and undoubtedly fatalities have occurred due to the tsunami in Japan.

Sad to see Sendai was hit...a girlfriend of mine taught English there for a number of years (thankfully she recently moved to Victoria, BC recently). Very good coverage here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12709598

This absolutely unbelievable to be watching this from my home. I worry about my daughters boyfriends paternal grandmother and 2 elderly great aunts who live in hawaii and my sil (husbands sister) and her boyfriend are in hawaii right now too. Daughters boyfriend visited tokyo just this past january. His dad's side is japanese.

Praying for all in the tsunami's path (personally felt sick hearing New Zealand is also being mentioned).

My son is two months away from getting his geology degree and one of our neighbours has a nephew that is a geologist in New Zealand (prior to the most recent earthquake the wife was encouraging my son to contact her nephew re applying for a job there). I'm at the point I hope he gets a job in either Calgary, Saskatchewan or Houston.

Tsunami Watch for the west coast of the United States and Canada. Really hope people don't panic and evacuate to high ground in an orderly manner.

The Philippines is also under a tsunami alert...the PHIVOLCS expects the tsunami to be 1 meter high when it hits between 5-7PM local time...

I'll be praying for everyone in Japan...

Have to remember that a tsunami is like a storm surge and represents a sea level rise of 4-6 feet-they are also particularly bad in bays and harbors within bays as the name implies.

Tsunami apparently now about to hit Guam as the water levels are dropping there which is usually the first indication.

Wow! My prayers are with them! By the way, El Salvador is under a tsunami warning too hopefully no more countries will be affected but let's be prepared.

I got friends and fam on the west coast (cali), any idea how big the waves may be there? I saw SF is expecting the arrival times around 0808 PST (1108 EST)

I've been hearing 2-5 feet when it reaches the west coast, but it's difficult to know for sure until it actually hits.

It doesn't sound like a lot, but a 5 foot sea level rise would be quite devastating in some places.

Latest information from the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center indicates an expected tsunami amplitude of 2.5 m (8 ft) in Crescent City, CA with the initial wave arriving around 1523 UTC.

They just had there 51rst AFTER SHOCK! Oh and here in Okinawa the wave was less the 3 feet but we way down south and off to the south west so it would be hard to get a big one from where it originated
