Earthquake Swarm in Santa Rosa, Guatemala

#1 Postby Macrocane » Mon Sep 19, 2011 10:20 pm

An eartquake swarm began on July 20, 2011 in the department of Santa Rosa in eastern Guatemala with epicenter in the Jalpatagua fault. Since then more than 4000 earthquakes have been registered more than 40 have been sensible. The earthquakes hadn't caused any damage until today when the strongest earthquake since the beggining of the swarm were registered.

The strongest quake occured at 12:33 pm (local time) and according to the INSIVUMEH (guatemalan geological service) it had a magnitude of 4.9 (according to the USGS it was 5.8), and it was felt through Guatemala and parts of El Salvador. The quake was not that strong but it was shallow enough and close enough to populated areas to cause damages. The last report from the Guatemalan government said that 1 person was killed, 3 more are missing and almost 1150 are in shelters. There have been landslides in some roads. At least 6 quakes more have occurred today but that was the strongest. Here are a couple of links but all of them in Spanish:
