5.6 Oklahoma Earthquake (Nov. 5th, 2011)

#1 Postby Extremeweatherguy » Sat Nov 05, 2011 11:41 pm

Just had another (even stronger) earthquake in central Oklahoma. The USGS is saying that it was a magnitude 5.6, which would make it the strongest earthquake in state history (previously a 5.5 in 1952) if the rating holds.

I was definitely pretty freaked out by this one. The ground motions were getting a bit crazy here on the 3rd floor of the building i am in, and it was noticeably more severe than this morning's. I would be very surprised if there was not some sort of damage up close to where the epicenter was located.

I'm hearing some people around DFW felt this, but I didn't.

I was lucky enough to be in Washington DC on 8/23 though. 5.6 is a nice earthquake, strong enough that you KNOW beyond a shadow of a doubt what is happening, but weak enough to not cause major damages. I'd like to ride one again, but oh God, I would never want to experience anything stronger.

Homes damaged and roads buckled by series of shocks including the biggest on record in US state

Earthquakes of up to 5.6 magnitude have shaken Oklahoma, damaging buildings and roads and sending a handful of people to hospital.

The first quake was recorded on Saturday morning at a magnitude of 4.7. The second came on Saturday night and is the largest recorded in Oklahoma, topping a tremor of 5.5 magnitude in 1952, according to the US Geological Survey.

In Prague, Oklahoma, where the first quake was centred, city manager Jim Greff said part of the town library's ceiling collapsed and a chimney fell through the roof of a home. There were no serious injuries.

The quake buckled highway 62 in three places west of Prague and sent a boulder "about the size of an SUV" tumbling onto a rural road in south-east Lincoln County, said Aaron Bennett, dispatch supervisor for the county's emergency management division.

What is up with all the earthquakes in OK recently? And they seem to be pretty shallow too...y'all trying to build a volcano?

Nawh... OK is sinking due to all the oil sucked out from under it.
