San Cristobal Volcano erupts in Nicaragua

#1 Postby Macrocane » Sat Sep 08, 2012 3:49 pm

San Cristobal, the highest volcano in Nicaragua, erupted this morning producing an ash cloud 5000 meters high (no lava flows have been registered), forcing the evacuation of at least 1500 people, the government says that 20000 could be affected by the ashfall and there's also a risk of acid rain and lahars because of the normal rains of the season. No deaths have been reported but damages to the crops and forests in the area are expected. The government has declared yellow alert in Chinandega and green alert in Leon.
