HURAKAN wrote:The point is that the amount of tropical cyclone activity in the SE Indian Ocean doesn't warrant two areas of responsibilities compared to basins like the WPAC that has annually a large number of tropical cyclones and only has one area of resposibility. That's my point. It may work for the WMO but I don't see the point. Sorry.

I think you missed my point. There are 14 areas in the WPac, only that the JMA has overall responsibility. Taking an average of 23.33 storms a year (23 in 2005, 23 in 2006, 24 in 2007) in the WPac, that averages 1.67 in every area. In the SE IO itself, where there are five TCWCs, taking an average of 9 storms a year (it was 12 in 05/06, 5 last year and 10 so far this year), that works out to 1.8 in every area. In this case, shouldn't this area have MORE TCWCs?

(EDIT: There are 5 SEIO TCWCs, not 4)
(EDIT: Update numbers with past three seasons' activity)

Where can you find this list of names from Jakarta? It's kind of odd that Vamei was actually over Sumatra, but it was named by JMA. I doubt that would be different if it happened today.

Don't know about the names but Jakarta only covers from the equator to 10ºS, and from 90ºE to 125ºE. In the case of Vamei, Jakarta didn't have jurisdiction even if they have been naming since 2001.

Interesting to see the difference in track and strength between the different agencies right now, doesn't look too bad right now though.
