During Hurricane Felix, NOAA aborted a flight because of over stressing the aircraft's structure..... the NHC forecaster on duty put the reason why they aborted into the discussion and that started a media frenzy............
our problem today is a persistent problem that happens more frequently than others..... we are in the process of trouble shooting it.

The mission for tonight which takes off in about an hour is still good to go right? Or will they have to abort it because of the problem this afternoon?

you do have to remember we have 7 operational aircraft here at Homestead.... thus meaning you won't get the problem aircraft for the next flight...... Earlier flight 5302; now 5307

Thats what I figured but I also know that it takes time to prep the aircraft and all that so i wasn't completely sure. I also know that with commercial aircraft if they find a big enough problem then it could ground all aircraft of that type until the problem can be fixed if its found to be a problem with the design that affects more then just that 1 aircraft.

we ground that aircraft until the problem is 'thought' to be fixed..... we've have lockheed reps working with our maintenance guys and have parts on order to TRY to fix this common problem....this isn't just one aircraft... this is ALL of the weather birds.... some just work better than others.

it depends.... if Cuba is going to be hit by Gustav then maybe... it depends on how much information the Cuban gov't wants on the storm.
there is a high probability that we'll get the dip & overflight clearances... but we'll see.

I can not find any observations supporting hurricane strength for Gustav. Am I missing them?

The area is not well sampled at all. The strongest winds would be over land where Recon will not go and there are no reports that I can find in that area.
