ATL: Tropical Storm Bertha RECON Discussion

I've put together a full suite of Google Earth floater image overlays for Bertha's current position using the images found here

FWIW, you can get satellite floaters from NRL. Just click on that fancy little red icon labelled "KML" next to Bertha's name. When the track loads up, click on the latest plot and you should be able to load up an image. It includes both GOES-12 and polar obriting satellite images.

Awesome! Except I can't make it work quite yet - When I click on the "Bertha" KML link here

I can't find the satellite images - although the tracking info is VERY detailed.

You should be able to double click on the latest hurricane symbol. A box should appear listing a BUNCH of satellite images. Toward the top, there should should be the latest GOES-12 image. Click on the word Infrared. That should get the image to load up.

Will todays mission find a stronger Bertha,the same intensity as yesterday,or a weaker Bertha? Less discuss about what recon will find at this thread.

I am leaning towards a weaker Bertha,but we will see when they get there.

RECON plane getting closer to the east coast. Should arrive in Bertha's eye in about two hours or more.

I've got a question, if the plane has a big problem in the pilot has only a short enough time to make a landing in Bermuda. Could they land in Bermuda, or is the airport not able to land a recon plane?

We have clearance to land in Bermuda if needed... It is over 2 hours to get to the nearest possible divert bases (Cherry Point MCAS, Pope AFB, Langley AFB, Norfolk NAS, Hunter AAF, Patrick AFB, Charleston AFB) On all oceanic trips we are all required to carry our passports and clearance forms just incase.

Ocean is the LAST resort... if we can make it into an international airport/air base we absolutely will... 40million dollar aircraft gone if we land in the water... and worse, loss of life... (there has ONLY been one C130 to successfully land in the ocean... Venezuelan AF C130).

we can't.... we haven't stood up Bermuda... and we can't fly an operational tasking without a spare aircraft.

See that 309 doing the duty again.....back to back long endurance trips...speaks well for the bird and mtc.

BTW is that one of your C130's that is now sitting on the ramp at Bermuda at the left end of the pax terminal???

since the 5309 came back alpha 1... mxs will release it to us in a heartbeat..... one less plane for them to worry about... endurance trips for the plane are key for longevity.

in our terms standing up Bermuda means that we have all of our equipment in Bermuda to sustain operations for an amount of time... when we stand down bermuda... we are bringing all of our equipment back to BIX... (STX we leave our equipment there for the season...)

When I was in the Navy, all we needed to get off the ship was military ID. I didn't have a passport until I transferred to ComNavSixPack. Of course, I imagine clearance was arranged for us before the ship ever arrived.


My high school Spring Break trip was in Bermuda. Big fun.

nope... we'll get a several day watch from CARCAH and then head down to STX about a day before the tasking.
