They already have plenty of planes scheduled for 94L, why send it down there? Cristobal only has 12 hour fixes, 94L has 6 hour fixes.

Mainly because of the eventual threat. 94L potentially may threaten land as a hurricane. Cristobal can be monitored with the observation network already in place. Furthermore, with the observation network in place over the US (both land, sea, and upper-air), the model data is much better for Cristobal than for 94L.

Recon has found surface winds that probably do back up the 45kts at the surface despite a rather unimpressive look.

Cristobal is still in proximity to land, so you will have recon until the NHC gives us the clear to stop flying.

flying over islands/land as nothing to do with the SATCOM.... its the communication between the aircraft, the satellites and the ground stations.... there could be times were we are having problem with the SATCOM and can't relay the recordings until we land via phone or we'll do an HF phone patch.........
