A typhoon with winds of up to 140km/h (87 mph) has hit the east coast of Taiwan bringing heavy rain, and causing schools and businesses to close.

The country's stock market has shut for the day and transport have been severely disrupted.

Taiwanese stacked sandbags and boarded up windows as typhoon Fung-Wong approached.

Taiwan is still reeling from tropical storm Kalmaegi earlier this month which left 20 people dead and six missing.

Rain and wind lashed the east coast of the island, causing a rock slide in the Taroko Gorge that injured a man, police said on Sunday.

Coastguard officials said they were searching for a fishing boat carrying four Taiwanese and a Chinese man which went missing on Friday near Matsu, off China's south-eastern coast.

In northern Taiwan, winds whipped up giant waves and hundreds of fishing boats took shelter in port.

Officials said dozens of villagers were evacuated from a mountainous region in southern Kaohsiung where several houses were buried by mudslides caused by Kalmaegi.

A Central Weather Bureau forecaster was quoted as saying the total rainfall may reach 900mm (35 inches).

Bulletin
Severe Tropical Storm Fung-wong Bulletin Nr 8
1300 UTC Monday July 28 2008
Operational time 1200 UTC

...Fung-wong weakens...nearing landfall in China...

A tropical storm warning remains recommended for Yonagunijima in the western Ryukyu Islands. The tropical storm warning previously recommended for Ishigaki...Iriomote...Hateruma...Shimoji-shima...and Miyakojima is no longer necessary.

Yonaguni-jima continues to report sustained winds of tropical storm strength...hence the reason for the continued warning.

The tropical storm warning previously recommended for the northern Balintang islands is no longer necessary.

A tropical storm warning remains recommended for the entire coast of Taiwan...as well as Orchid Island and Lüdao off the eastern coast. The typhoon warnings for the coast of Taiwan are no longer necessary.

A typhoon warning is recommended for the western Taiwanese islands of Penghu and Matsu.

A tropical storm warning remains recommended for the Chinese coast from Shantou to Xiamen...and from Fuzhou north to Tongshan.

A tropical storm warning is now recommended from Tongshan further north to Wenzhou.

A typhoon warning remains recommended for the Chinese coast from Xiamen to Fuzhou.

The centre of STS Fung-wong appears to be right off the coast of China...with a 1059Z F-16 SSMIS pass showing the centre roughly around 24.9N 119.9E. The latest infrared satellite imagery from 1130Z shows that the terrain of Taiwan did a number on the convection...resulting in a centre that I am not confident in but placed roughly at 25.0N 119.8E. The JMA's 1200Z position centred the storm at latitude 25.2N...longitude 119.8E...about 60 km...35 miles off the Chinese coast southeast of Tangbian village...about 80 km...50 miles south of Changle Airport near Fuzhou, China...or about 175 km...110 miles west of Taipei, Taiwan.

This is an initial motion over the past 13 hours of about 320/11...or northwest at 21 km/h...13 mph. On this forecast track...Fung-wong should be inland near Tangbian in the next few hours.

The initial intensity estimate is a tricky one. Dvorak estimates are pretty spread out...with the JTWC at T3.5...CIMSS raw T-number at T3.7...and T4.0 from SAB and JMA. The JMA's 12z intensity is 55 kt...which may be a tad low as there is still an eye-like feature on the 1059Z SSMIS microwave. I do not believe this is a typhoon right now...so initial intensity is 60 kt...110 km/h...70 mph.

No re-strengthening is expected before landfall...but as it cannot be ruled out...as well as a high probability of typhoon-force gusts...a typhoon warning remains recommended for the Chinese coast.

The minimum central pressure reported by the JMA at 1200Z is 975 hPa.

Repeating the 1200Z position...25.2N 119.8E...about 60 km southeast of Tangbian village just off the Chinese coast. Maximum sustained winds are near 110 km/h. Movement...northwest at around 21 km/h.

Next bulletin by 1500Z.

Bulletin
Severe Tropical Storm Fung-wong Bulletin Nr 9...final
1515 UTC Monday July 28 2008
Operational time 1500 UTC

...Fung-wong now inland near Chinese coast...

The typhoon warning previously recommended for the western Taiwanese islands of Penghu and Matsu is now a tropical storm warning. The typhoon warning previously recommended for China from Xiamen to Fuzhou is now a tropical storm warning.

A tropical storm warning is now recommended for Yonagunijima in the western Ryukyu Islands...for the entire coast of Taiwan...Orchid Island and Lüdao off the eastern coast of Taiwan...Penghu and Matsu off the western coast of Taiwan...and for China from Shantou north to Tongshan.

Severe Tropical Storm Fung-wong has made landfall in China about 25 km...15 miles south of Changle Airport near Fuzhou, China. At 11 pm...1500Z...the centre of Severe Tropical Storm Fung-wong was located near latitude 25.7N...longitude 119.6E...or about 50 km...30 miles south-southeast of Fuzhou, China. This position is based on a 1500Z satellite fix from RJTD.

This is an initial motion over the past 16 hours of about 324/11...or north-northwest at 21 km/h...13 mph. On this forecast track...Fung-wong should continue tracking inland into central eastern China.

The landfall intensity estimate is 55 kt...100 km/h...65 mph. This is down from the 60 kt estimate three hours ago...mostly based on the JTWC's 12z intensity of 60 kt...which is only about 53 kt 10-min. From here on out...it should be a gradual weakening inland...and Fung-wong could weaken to a tropical depression by tomorrow night.

The minimum central pressure reported by the JMA at 1200Z is 975 hPa.

Repeating the 1500Z position...25.7N 119.6E...inland China about 50 km south-southeast of Fuzhou, China. Maximum sustained winds are near 100 km/h. Movement...north-northwest at around 21 km/h.

This is the final bulletin.

We're getting a bit of the action here in Shanghai now. Had an awesome thunderstorm last night and the latest TAF for Hongqiao airport suggest gusts up to 40kts later today which will no doubt blow all the trash around the streets!

Typhoon Causes NT$657.3M Agricultural Loss In Taiwan

TAIPEI (Dow Jones)--Typhoon Fung-wong caused NT$657.3 million of agricultural losses as of 0700 GMT, Taiwan's Council of Agriculture said in a statement Tuesday.

The statement updates a loss of NT$177.1 million estimated by the council in a statement late Monday.

According to the latest statement, a total of 11,663 hectares were affected by floods, which damaged crops such as pomelo, watermelon and vegetables. The floods resulted in NT$3.69 million worth of livestock losses, the council said.

Two people were killed in the typhoon, according to an Agence France-Presse report Tuesday.

Typhoons frequently hit Taiwan in the summer, driving up the prices of fresh food.
