Looks like some serious rain! I wonder if the winds are still light, even in these showers. I half expect winds to suddenly pick up to 25kts in like an hour. This thing looks so convincing on satellite. But the recon showed nothing closed. I'm thinking almost any minute now it'll skip TD status and be Fay!

I almost hate to report this but we have had light showers and I went in the pool.

We have lightening to the north, but no noise.

Laying in the pool watching the sky light up reminds me of why I live here and love the man I am married to.

Re: 92L NE Caribbean=New Special Local Statement

#95 Postby cycloneye » Thu Aug 14, 2008 8:43 pm

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT
PRZ001-PRZ002-PRZ003-PRZ004-PRZ005-PRZ006-PRZ007-PRZ008-PRZ009-PRZ010
-PRZ011-PRZ012-PRZ013-VIZ001-VIZ002-150420-

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JUAN PR
920 PM AST THU AUG 14 2008

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN SAN JUAN HAS ISSUED A SPECIAL WEATHER
STATEMENT EFFECTIVE UNTIL 1220 AM AST FOR PEOPLE IN PUERTO RICO AND
THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS

...STRONG TROPICAL WAVE AND ASSOCIATED AREA OF LOW PRESSURE OVER THE
VIRGIN ISLANDS MOVING WEST INTO PUERTO RICO LATER TONIGHT AND
FRIDAY...
...FLASH FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FOR THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS AND
PUERTO RICO THROUGH FRIDAY...

A STRONG TROPICAL WAVE AND ITS ASSOCIATED LOW PRESSURE HAS BEEN
GRADUALLY MOVING WESTWARD DURING THE LAST FEW HOURS AND IS NOW
LOCATED OVER THE VIRGIN ISLANDS. BASED ON THIS MOTION...THE LARGE
CLOUDS MASS AND ASSOCIATED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO
CONTINUE MOVING WEST ACROSS VIEQUES CULEBRA AND INTO PUERTO RICO
DURING THE REMAINDER OF TONIGHT AND FRIDAY.

LATEST SAN JUAN DOPPLER RADAR IMAGES SHOW A LARGE AREA OF SHOWERS
AND THUNDERSTORMS OVER SAINT CROIX AND EAST OF SAINT THOMAS MOVING
GENERALLY WESTWARD. ALTHOUGH THE NOAA AND AIR FORCE HURRICANE
HUNTERS INDICATED THAT THE WAVE HAD NOT BECOME BETTER
ORGANIZED...THE POTENTIAL STILL REMAINS FOR THE WAVE TO BECOME A
TROPICAL DEPRESSION AT ANYTIME DURING THE NEXT 24 HOURS.

REGARDLESS OF WHETHER OR NOT THE WAVE INTENSIFIES INTO A TROPICAL
DEPRESSION...SIGNIFICANT EFFECTS ARE ALREADY OCCURRING ACROSS THE
U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS. THUNDERSTORMS HAVE AFFECTED THE ISLAND OF SAINT
DURING THE LAST THREE HOURS AND MORE ARE ON THE WAY WEST ACROSS THE
TERRITORY. THEREFORE RESIDENTS AND VISITORS IN THE U.S. VIRGIN
ISLANDS AND PUERTO RICO SHOULD CLOSELY MONITOR ITS PROGRESS.

...INLAND FLOODING...
OUTER BANDS OF SHOWERS AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS ARE NOW MOVING
THROUGH PUERTO RICO WHILE A LARGE CLUSTER OF SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS IS OVER THE VIRGIN ISLANDS AND THE NORTHERN LEEWARDS.
AS THESE MOVE FURTHER WEST...THE RISK OF URBAN AND SMALL STREAM
FLOODING AND FLASH FLOODING WILL INCREASE FOR THE VIRGIN ISLANDS AND
PUERTO RICO. THESE RAIN BANDS WILL BECOME FREQUENT AND HEAVIER LATER
TONIGHT INTO FRIDAY ACROSS VIEQUES...CULEBRA...THE EASTERN HALF OF
PUERTO RICO AND THE REMAINDER OF THE ISLAND THROUGH FRIDAY. THE LOW
PRESSURE ASSOCIATED WITH THE WAVE IS EXPECTED TO MOVE WEST FROM THE
VIRGIN ISLANDS INTO PUERTO RICO TONIGHT AND BRING POTENTIALLY HEAVY
RAINFALL. RAINFALL TOTALS OF ONE TO THREE INCHES ARE EXPECTED ACROSS
THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS AND THREE TO FIVE INCHES FOR PUERTO
RICO...WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS POSSIBLE ACROSS HIGHER TERRAIN.
LANDSLIDES AND MUDSLIDES ARE POSSIBLE. A FLASH FLOOD WATCH REMAINS
IN EFFECT FOR THE LOCAL AREA FOR TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY.

...HIGH SURF AND COASTAL FLOODING...
MARINERS SHOULD MONITOR THE WEATHER SITUATION. CONDITIONS WILL
CONTINUE TO DETERIORATE ACROSS THE ATLANTIC AND CARIBBEAN WATERS
DURING THE REMAINDER OF TONIGHT AND FRIDAY AS THE TROPICAL WAVE AND
ITS ASSOCIATED WEATHER MOVES WESTWARD...BRINGING SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS IN THE FORM OF SQUALLS. THUNDERSTORMS WILL LIKELY
CONTAIN STRONG AND GUSTY WINDS OF 34 KNOTS OR GREATER...FREQUENT
CLOUD TO WATER LIGHTNING...LOCALLY ROUGH SEAS...GREATLY REDUCED
VISIBILITIES IN TORRENTIAL RAINFALL AND POSSIBLY SOME SMALL HAIL. IN
ADDITION...WATERSPOUTS ARE POSSIBLE IN SOME OF THE RAINBANDS.
LOCALLY HIGH WAVES CREATED BY THE SQUALLS WILL CONTINUE TO AFFECT
THE VIRGIN ISLAND WATERS TONIGHT AND PUERTO RICO LATER. SEAS WILL
INCREASE TO 6 TO 7 FEET BY FRIDAY MAINLY ALONG THE NORTH AND EAST
COASTS OF THE ISLANDS. MODERATE SWELLS SHOULD AFFECT THE LOCAL
ATLANTIC WATERS TONIGHT AND FRIDAY. SMALL CRAFT ADVISORIES WILL BE
IN EFFECT LATER THIS EVENING THROUGH FRIDAY FOR THE OFFSHORE
ATLANTIC...AND MAY BE REQUIRED FOR PARTS OF THE EASTERN CARIBBEAN
WATERS...INCLUDING THE PASSAGES POSSIBLY ON FRIDAY.

...WINDS...
NO SIGNIFICANT WINDS HAVE BEEN REPORTED ACROSS THE VIRGIN ISLANDS
DURING THE LAST THREE HOURS. AS THE SQUALLS ACROSS THE VIRGIN
ISLANDS MOVE INTO EASTERN AND NORTH PUERTO RICO WATERS LATER
TONIGHT...STRONG GUSTY WINDS SHOULD BE EXPECTED AT TIMES GUSTING TO
34 KNOTS OR HIGHER.

FOR THE LAND AREAS OF THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS AND PUERTO RICO...
OCCASIONAL WIND GUSTS TO 35 MPH REMAIN POSSIBLE TONIGHT THROUGH
FRIDAY...ESPECIALLY WITH PASSING SQUALLS...AND ACROSS HIGHER
TERRAIN.

THE NEXT SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT WILL BE ISSUED AROUND 1220 AM BY
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORECAST OFFICE IN SAN JUAN PUERTO RICO.

Thanks, guys! I really feel we've dodged a bullet (again!) in BVI. I'm looking at radar and sat and have no idea how they figure out a position, don't think there's any spin, just some 'curve'. Hey, this is AFTER ALL, a tropical wave, which are known to bring, on occasion, very heavy rains, strong gusty winds, frequently lightning, etc.

Although I do see what looks like a complete circle of circulation north of St. Thomas. Radar can trick your eye on those things, though. Tstorms are building, moving WSW, so Luis, look out, they may be on target for greater metro San Juan. MJ, looks like they will pass to your north, not?

I spent all day at housesitting location, putting stuff away, and was going to spend the night (which I'm supposed to do to keep a party from occurring and trashing the place). But got tired of the 17yr old, his habits (sticky fingers), his attitude, and his friends, decided to spend a night NOT being eaten by mosquitos. My modest apartment has good screens all around, and when they tear, I fix them! OK, so there's no generator or pool, who was going swimming tonight? :roflmao:

There's some lightning visible to the east (I'm close to Humacao, center-east of PR). No rain yet.

I just finished closing windows and shutters on the east side of the house and I'm calling it a day.

Good night. :)

Ah, beautiful, wonderful, RAIN!!! Radar showing lots more showers, so everybody in the neighborhood should get some!!!

Hearing thunder now, so may soon shut off the computer before power drops and gives it a fry. Wind is whistling a bit now. Whoops, thunder rattling the windows now, just like our last good wave!! :D

I'm taking the book, the lantern, and heading to bed early. Everyone stay safe!

I am in the lighter NW portion right now (Rincon on the west coast) and it has been fairly light rain overnight so far. Lots of lightening and thunder. I will keep an eye and you can check in on the live weather from my station here:

http://www.rinconadventure.com/Weather/wxindex.php

Only .06 inches of rain so far but i am sure that will change. I will keep a close eye on the winds for any noticeable shifts as well.
