SURFACE WIND VISUALLY OBSERVED

They look at the waves. Thats what they used to do before they had the fancy SFMR tools.

scientifically we use a flight computer ... just like the ones used by pilots trying to flight plan.....
we also have charts on what to look for when looking at the waves at the surface...

the smurf helps, but if we see the waves we will verify what the smurf found.

Theres only two. NOAA9 is the G-IV mission in the GOM.

Also, I think there was three in Katrina before landfall.

I remember the same, RL3AO: two AF planes and one NOAA plane (not the G-IV).

NOAA plane flying at about 6,800 feet (780mb) - what is the reduction factor at that level? About 85% of flight-level winds?

Somewhere between 80% and 85%, I would think.

There were 4 in Hurricane Rita on 9/22 and 9/23.

1 AF, 1 Navy, and 2 NOAA

this has a pressure profile more consistent with a WPAC typhoon than an Atlantic hurricane

I recall Katrina was like this, bombed out but winds didn't respond.

Is it related to the very high heat content I wonder?

Interesting, kinda like Katrina and Rita had...after all 974mb is more typical of about 85 kt than 70 kt.

Two sets ago the first ob was:

234830 1941N <7914W 7805 02107 9940 +153 +152 134072 075 060 017 00

Look at the longitude. I think the system threw out the whole set because of that.

My system is very exact about making sure the data is valid. So anything that is out of line gets rejected. In this case, it was a small error, the < should have been a 0. But rather than take a chance about letting corrupt data in, I have it set to reject the entire ob if it is corrupt in any way. I added the ob back though and simply changed the < to a 0. I'll try to keep a better eye on it tonight. Seems like they are having some problems just like the AF recon did.

88 kt FL, but a data set malfunctioned so it might be higher. That supports 75 kt at the surface, at least.

Yeah, Luis, it's been a little while since I've been around here 8-)

Anyway, hopefully the drop(s) should be coming in over the next few minutes...those should be interesting.
