The sky also looks weird............all our plants were brought down when I went out to check....These are the "typhoon winds" I'm familliar with

This is the most updated radar I could find right now from Weather Underground:

http://www.wunderground.com/wundermap/?lat=14.52000046&lon=121.00000000&zoom=8&pin=Manila%2c%20Philippines&type=hyb&rad=0&wxsn=0&svr=0&cams=0&sat=1&sat.num=1&sat.spd=25&sat.opa=85&sat.gtt1=109&sat.gtt2=108&sat.type=IR4&riv=0&mm=0&hur=0

Use the back out key (-) to see the size of the system versus the land mass. Ozonepete
said earlier that the eye was past Manila moving off the west coast.

Hi, I'm back. Breeze, those supposed radars won't work for me. The Weather Channel one is showing only clouds (the radar tab below the image loop is light grey meaning unavailable, and I've got the same problem with the WU one.

From reports that people have given me here, it would seem that the center of the eye passed over southern metro Manila down to around Cuenca, and it would seem it should be off the coast now. However I am seeing a 4PM report from MAnila with NNW winds at 32mph gusting to 48mph bar 29.39 falling. That would indicate that the eye has slowed down or stalled briefly southeast of Manila. I need to see more locations.

Meanwhile, a new area of VERY strong convection has formed just east of Manila and is moving in there now.

I admit those aren't the best radars, lol... I'm still Googling for one from a more
"official" agency, and they don't seem to be out there, I'm afraid.

Glad you're back.

:)

I found a pressure of 29.15 and light wnw winds (8mph) at ANTIPOLO CITY, east of Manila downtown. The "eye" or what's left of it, is broad and diffuse apparently.

It's maddening to have so little data coming out of there, especially no radar!

Avocado, are you getting any readings from the area?

Just got this from WU. All indications are that the eye has stalled to the east of Manila or is moving northward along the east side of the Manila temporarily. This is not very unusual - eyes sometimes do this, so I would not worry that it's going to hang around. In addition, it's really hard to pinpoint the location of a messy "eye" like this one.
I'll keep digging.

Here's another from the WU. I annotated it to show where the center must be. It must have slowed down, because some of our friends here had strong winds/calm 20 minutes/back to strong winds south of Manila an hour or two earlier.

This satellite image from 2030 supports the eye (center) location I drew:

So it's quite possible that wasn't the eye passage before around 18-19Z. I'm guessing what some people reported here was actually the activity from rain bands - strong winds, then a lighter period, then strong again. The real eye/center is located just to the southeast of Manila now and will move westward off the coast in the next hour or two. That makes the most sense to me.

No, I tried the links and I was only able to ge the enhanced IR to show up. I also don't fully trust the observations coming out of the area, I wonder if some of the equipment isn't handling the winds very well.

I've run into the same problem in the past. I was desperately trying to find upper-air soundings for 22W when it was north of Luzon (to try and analyze the shape of the ridge) and nothing could be found. You would think a country with so much tropical vulnerability would be all about sharing weather data. Long gone are the days of Clark Air Force Base and Subic Bay Naval Station.

Sad! I too suspect some of the observations. I'm also guessing that they get some very unique local orographic effects with all of those mountains and valleys around the area. That must explain part of it. Anyway, thanks for always bein' around here and offering your expert advice.

Hi Breeze, I guess all of our Filipino friends are fast asleep. A friend of mine once observed how everybody fell asleep after Hurricane Gloria hit here in 1985. The worst was over around 5PM, and even though it was still the afternoon, everyone laid down and passed out for a few hours! Must be the stress.

Our friends there haved not posted anymore for a few hours, meaning what you said,or maybe power is out and the internet connections are slow to nil.Hopefully, they come soon to tell us the aftermath of this event. Also the stormchasers Jim and Typhoon Hunter information that they haved gathered will be very interesting to see.

I know they are so worn out! You get that rush of excitement and adrenalin and then
it hits you afterwards how tired you really are. I hope they are sleeping safe and well!
I know I would be washed out after all of that...lol...

It starting to rain again so we're now experiencing rain+strong winds here in my place.

Most of have no electricity anymore so maybe that's the reason why the others can't post. Luckily I have wireless internet but I'm als0 trying to save my laptop battery power.
