Here's a great site to see the potential impacts of Extratropical Storm Ida on the Mid Atlantic Coast Thu/Fri. It's a NOAA extratropical storm surge page. Just click a location and get a nice graphic of the projected tide/surge levels for whatever time period you choose. A detailed explanation of the chart is on the main page. There is talk of this storm rivaling the Ash Wednesday 1962 storm as far as tide levels in the mouth of the Chesapeake. Higher than Isabel.

have a question for you wxman. Here in Palm Beach county the pressure dropped so quickly it sounded my weather station alarm around an hour or so ago. Is that from Ida?

Thanks a lot for that, wxman. That's very cool. Yeah, I'm hearing/seeing increasing concerns for how bad this storm will get along the mid-Atlantic. And I remember you and I talked about this on Monday. The GFS was forecasting a whopping storm at that time due to the phasing of Ida's remnant low and southern stream energy with the northern jet stream. Most of the other models did not agree and then the GFS backed off. Now the GFS is coming back to a pretty strong low again and this time the other models are getting on board. I'm really anxious to see the 00Z runs since 18Z is never that trustworthy. The low position will be very important if these tide/surges were to beat the 62 storm or Isabel in the Chesapeake area.

Re: ATL : TROPICAL DEPRESSION IDA

The front has swept in behind Ida's remnants. The storm's overcast is still over us four days now causing cool weather at 68* that feels freezing. If we could get the sun out it would warm up.

The surface center seems like it swept up and caught up with the convection bands up in the Piedmont.

That's not the surface center. The surface center is just off the coast of Cape Hatteras, NC.

On the cmc the remnant gets pushed south and eventually ends up vacationing in the Bahamas.

The hurricane heart was still in there. 26 foot record waves at a buoy. 75mph wind yesterday.

The big east coast storm this year was a hurricane remnant nor'easter.

Once Ida's remnants went up the Atlantic east coast it seems like the discussion here about Ida stopped. It might have no longer been a tropical system once it made landfall near Dauphin Island, AL but it was still a major weather event IMHO. The Carolinas and Virginia took quite a beating from Ida's remains. I have friends who live in Yorktown, VA and they had heavy gusts all day on Thursday and Thursday night. A large oak went down in their back yard late Thursday night but fortunately it didn't hit their house or any nearby adjacent houses. They contacted a tree guy late on Thursday night and by early Friday morning the guy was there to cut the tree up and haul it off. That's what I call quick service. I waited over a month to get someone to come remove an oak tree from my front yard right after Katrina. That sea foam that I saw on video from TWC from the Carolinas was weird, never have seen that before and certainly not around here where I live, there's not enough surf action here.
