Yeah, after the burst early & now the gusty winds on the cold air filtering in behind Earl. I'm happy he wasnt any stronger, or close at landfall, to my area.

Update No. 4, bye bye Earl:

I'm still not sure Earl is actually a tropical storm right now. Its structure is very impressive for a 70 mph storm. Perhaps post-season they'll note that.

Jeez more strong winds & rain went through past 20 minutes. Sustained winds on my home set 31 gusting to 52 mph (peak gusts) for about 10 minutes again. Still breezy now, but have calm down from before. Back 10 to 15 mph sustained now & clearing again.

Wow, over the Gulf of St. Lawrence and still a solid storm. Maybe it might make another landfall, either in far eastern Quebec or western Newfoundland.

I'd watch data but it probably has weakened a tad since Nova Scotia landfall. Still might be 65 kt though.

Just got power back here. Winds were very strong. Nothing compared to Juan where Im currently living, but Halifax appears to have taken the brunt... which is kind of weird, as they're so far away from the track.

That's good that you have power now :)

Actually, Halifax did take the brunt as the center of the storm tracked just to the north and northwest.

Water temperatures ahead of Earl. Actually not that bad for maintaining itself until it hits the Lower North Shore. Mostly mid-60s to lower 70s in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. If it emerges over Labrador while still tropical (unlikely), water temperatures drop into the 40s.

Ahhhh... a sigh of relief. Earl was a Juannna be Juan, but he didn't cut it. Sure was nasty though. Lost one tree in my garden :-( but it didn't hit the house so I'm thankful for that. Neighbours had a branch hit their live power lines. They fell over the street so noone could get off the dead end, but noone was going anywhere anyway. Then the power went out.

Power is back on now and things are getting cleaned up in the neighbourhood. Ever since Juan, we have an idea of what a cat 2 is, so anything less than that I am familiar withl. We know what we have to do... hunker down, clean up anything that can blow, get your supplies and wait it out. And like all the professionals say, prepare for the worst, hope for the best.

Thanks everybody :-)

I could be wrong, but Boat Harbour - at 51.6°N latitude - is the farthest north I can ever recall a Tropical Storm Warning being in effect for. I don't recall any ever for any European land.

Heath Point, QC, on Anticosti Island to the west of the center, is reporting 47 mph sustained winds with gusts to 61. Not exactly a sign of being extratropical.

Well, isn't that because officially it's still a tropical storm? :P

Yes, but it isn't showing signs of becoming ET yet.

I believe this will be the first time ever that a tropical cyclone made landfall on the North Shore of Quebec.

Correction: I looked up HURDAT and found 2 that have:

Sea Islands Hurricane of 1893 (was a TS at that point, re-analyzed)

Storm 4 of 1940 (not re-analyzed)
