8:34 Ruth O'Kelly-Lynch: Local film maker Lucinda Spurling is keeping us updated on the East End.
An hour ago the St. George's resident told me: "We have trees down and our house is starting to flood.
"There is also a sail boat that has broken free and on the rocks at the eastern side of stokes point." Sunday September 19, 2010 8:34 Ruth O'Kelly-Lynch
8:37 Ruth O'Kelly-Lynch: Lucinda was the one to spot a ferry was on rocks at Meyer Slip Point two hours ago.
She said: "May come loose, only the bow is on the rocks." Sunday September 19, 2010 8:37 Ruth O'Kelly-Lynch
8:37 Ruth O'Kelly-Lynch: At the time we had internet problems so I could not upload the photos. I am going to try again now.

:29pm: St Georges, like much of the island, is flooding rapidly, with water reaching up to the level of the Ordnance Island bridge.

8:40pm: BELCO says as of 8pm, there are 21,000 without power. For full details on BELCO outgages see here.

9pm: “Bernews HQ” is feeling it now, the wind is howling outside, and we are worried about losing power. We apologize if we abruptly stop updating at some point through the night. Rest assured, we will only stop if we are unable to update.

9:10pm: The Ferry Terminal in Hamilton has sustained damage, this photo is from around noon today.

9:51 Tim Smith: Just in case you can't wait until it appears on our website, here's our latest updated full story:

Bermuda is currently being lashed by howling gusts of 68 miles per hour as it comes under siege from Hurricane Igor.
Reports of damage to trees, boats and properties have been coming thick and fast with Igor just 56 nautical miles west-south-west away from the Island at 9 p.m.
Some St. George’s residents say they’ve seen tornadoes, but these have not been confirmed so far.
At 9 p.m., there have been no reports of serious injuries as a direct result of Igor.
Sustained winds at L.F. Wade International Airport were 45 knots (52 mph) at 8.55 p.m., while gusts were 59 knots (68 mph)...One woman from Cut Road, St. George’s, giving her name as Sarah, said at 7 p.m.: “Winds are really pounding now. Although the rain has subsided a little, bits of tree are starting to appear in our garden.”
Fierce winds are being reported across the Island, with this newspaper’s photographer saying from his Devonshire home: “I’ve just had a couple of trees fly past the window.”
... Belco spokeswoman Susan McGrath-Smith said: “As of 8 p.m., Hurricane Igor’s winds continue to take a toll on the electricity distribution system with approximately 21,000 customers without power across the Island.
...Flooding has been reported in Pembroke, particularly 42nd Street, Woodlands Road and Dutton Avenue, while waves on the South Shore are so intense that there’s no sand to be seen on some of the beaches and there’s severe flooding at the front of Boaz Island.

This link was posted earlier today. It features a live video feed. Although it is now being broadcast via wireless/low bandwidth, it still is informative. Thank you to the original poster and to the guy with the video camera

Photos: St George’s Town Floods Out
September 20, 2010 by bernews · Leave a Comment

The storm surge has caused island wide flooding, with word and photos coming in showing St George’s to be turning into a swimming pool before our eyes. The other end of the island has already experienced severe flooding, with the residents of the Boaz Island Condos in Sandy’s dealing with heavy floods, as well as many other parts of the island. It was predicted the waters would raise 5-7 feet during the storm, and as the photos below show this has held true for St George’s.

Water is gushing, photo below is looking towards Town Square from Customs dock

considering everything I guess Bermuda was lucky.
But oh what a mess they have to clean up.
I understand exactly what they are going through and it's not fun!

This morning, Mr. Caines who has been keeping Bermuda updated at the Emergency Broadcast Radio Station this weekend, said: "There has been property damage all around the Island and lots of trees and debris in roads. At first light we will get an assessment.

We would like to stress for persons to please stay off the roads so first responders can carry out their jobs quickly and efficiently."

Just heard word that St George's Prep (school that was badly damaged during Fabian) hasn't been hit too hard with minor damage to a gutter & window and lots of leaks. Many trees down in the school field but reports so far say there is no significant damage. Students won't return to school until power is restored & school is safe.
10:07 Tim Smith: At 8.55 a.m., gusts at the airport were 48 knots (55 mph), with sustained winds at 38 knots (44mph), according to Bermuda Weather Service. Monday September 20, 2010 10:07 Tim Smith
10:09 [Comment From Sharon Sharon : ]
9:45 mangrove Bay was restored with power. I hope the people in Boaz Island are doing ok. They were experiencing flooding.

Photo below shows the Hamilton side of the Causeway, which looks to have no severe damage to our layman eye, however experts need to assess the structure. This is same area that got destroyed in Fabian sadly taking 4 lives. Officials say "The Causeway remains closed; it is being assessed and when it is ready to be re-opened, the public will be informed via the media and the Emergency Broadcast Radio Station 100.1FM."

around 23,000 of the 35,500 residents are still without power but they seem to be working ahrd to get it back up. Word is there is major damage to the grid, though.
