Nope. Well, they charged extra cell phone batteries, but I kinda doubt that the cell towers will survive.

is that how they get the internet as well? I know on St. Martin, if they have generators they can still get the internet.

Nope, Internet is through traditional ISPs. It used to be that all internet connections went through a single deep-sea cable, although I think there may now be a satellite uplink too. Either way, no power means no Internet.

David Birch, the earring-wearing Public Safety Minister, has been warning that Igor will bring 50 foot waves. I think that may be a little high, but 40 foot seems likely. All of the beach restaurants have been abandoned; no one is even trying to save places like Mickey's, Coconuts and Ocean's Edge.

Parts of south shore road have already been closed near John Smith's bay because the waves are breaking over it... while Igor is still 440 miles away.

Yes, and too much caution is certainly better than not enough!

Search for 2 missing off Arecibo, St. Croix beaches
By CB Online Staff
cbnews@caribbeanbusinesspr.com

The Coast Guard continued to search Saturday for a young woman who was swept out to sea in Arecibo and a boy who went missing at a beach in St. Croix.

Both disappearances were blamed on large surf and dangerous currents kicked up by distant Hurricane Igor, which was nearing Bermuda but pounding the north coast of Puerto Rico and parts of the U.S. Virgin Islands with waves of up to 12 feet.

Atha Reyes Pérez, 18, and her husband José Reyes Lugo, 19, were both hit by a rogue wave at Posa de Obispo Beach in the Islote area of Arecibo early Friday afternoon.

Reyes Lugo was pulled to shore by other beach-goers, but Reyes Pérez was apparently pulled out to sea.

Coast Guard and Police Department Maritime Unit crews launched a search for the young woman.

The Coast Guard and the National Weather Service have been warning for days that huge waves spun off by potent Hurricane Igor would pound the north coast of the island well into the weekend.

In St. Croix, 16-year-old Aaron Holmes was pulled out to sea by strong currents while at the beach with his father and sister.

tim: Just in from the Police: 8.45 am - Marc Guishard of the Bermuda Weather Service reported sightings of tonadic activity on their radar. This activity is believed to occur in the next 30 to 45 minutes in the Eastern parishes. Mr Guishard has indicated that the Causeway should be temporarily closed.

That's what we know now - will update asap. Sunday September 19, 2010 9:07 tim

...Major George Jones told The Royal Gazette winds were high at Warwick Camp, which is a "hive of activity".

"The specialist team heading across the Causeway will lead other Regiment troops living in the East if a full embodiment is required," said Major Jones this morning.

"Should all other means of communication go down, we have a wholly self-contained radio system and will be able to communicate with the troops in St. George's."

Yesterday, Premier Ewart Brown called for Bermudians to unite as they face the threat of the storm, described by Public Safety Minister David Burch as "probably the worst we have seen".

Igor has repeatedly been likened to the devastating Hurricane Fabian, which claimed four lives and wreaked millions of dollars worth of damage in 2003.

It is following a similar path but, while its winds are wider than Fabian, early this morning they were said to be not quite as fierce...
