The Japanese record is 52 inches, but the Okinawa record is just 22 inches... this has already set a new record.

China has put parts of its east coast on alert as powerful Typhoon Muifa approaches the country.

Muifa battered Japan's southern island of Okinawa late on Friday as it headed towards China's Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces, near Shanghai.

More than 7,000 fishing boats have been called back to harbour, as winds reached 162km/h (100mph), generating waves of 36ft (11m) out at sea.

Air travel faces disruption and coastal areas are preparing for evacuations.

22 inches is a storm total record for Okinawa. Japanese 24-hour record is 46 inches.

Morning all. Still quite gusty here this morning.

I see the HK to Oki flight is scheduled, if it flies it'll be a very unpleasant approach in for the passengers and crew!

Daughter: "Is the big raccoon done yet, Mommy?" LOL

I haven't laughed so hard this typhoon since Jim advised standing facing the wind with your right arm out to figure out where the eye is.

Seeing wind gusts consistently under 50 kt now. Might be time to declare recovery.

The 18 WG/CV has declared TCCOR 1R for Okinawa, as of 1214L.
TCCOR-1R as of 1214. Everyone still needs to stay inside, but all the bases should be doing initial sweeps for damage before we go to storm watch. Almost over...

I heard the same thing in Key West after hurricane Georges pounded us all day. It is not uncommon but there is no evidence of such a turn in the current meteorology. Again, watch the winds - are they out of an unexpected direction? For Muifa, the winds went from NNE as it approached to SSE now. That indicates the typhoon passed south of you and is headed off (decreasing winds.) Remember the winds are 90 degrees to the eye.

I must say the infrastructure is pretty solid in Okinawa. Having internet data helps keep the fear factor down I think. You can bet the power would be off in most US coastal cities that took that kind of pounding and I've seen it take 2-4 weeks for the power to be restored. I remember times like during Hurricane Georges back Key West in 1998 - all we had was a FM radio station in Big Pine Key operating on generator power. One lady who was hiding in her closet called into the station and was almost hysterical asking the DJ when the storm was going to be over. Me? I was lovin every minute of it on my first cane chase with the legend Jim Leonard.

You're on the edge of the outer ring of rain. Should be clearing shortly and you can dry out.

Chinese media reports (in English):
http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2011 ... 061740.htm
http://www.shanghaidaily.com/nsp/Metro/ ... pproaches/

I have sent many messages to friends in Hangzhou, Shanghai and other locations in Eastern China.
Fingers crossed that they are well prepared.

The reports from Okinawa are staggering; more than 1,000mm of rainfall and Tropical Storm conditions for 48 hours+
