For those who need a conversion, the reported 3-day rainfall amounts from Nara of 1800 mm is roughly 70.9 inches... or 5.9 feet.

That is what is being said, that this is a record breaker, whats scary it is not just one site reporting that but several thus confirming it is likely true.

here's a rainfall map I made for September 2 to 4... based on JMA weather stations (I probably tallied more than 100 stations)... the legend I used only goes up to 600mm+ because reports beyond that amount are really few and far in between.. I fully agree though with the very heavy rain that Talas has dropped, particularly there in the Kii Peninsula (Nara, Wakayama, and Mie)... highest reports I've seen are around 1300mm in Miyagawa, 1000mm in Owase and Mihama, 1100mm in Kamikitayama, 800mm in Tenkawa, 700mm in Kayumi...
900mm in Yanase and Fukuhara-Asahi (Shikoku)...

i probably missed those stations that reported the highest though...

I had no idea it was so bad there. My thoughts and prayers are with all -

Severe tropical storm Talas, which hit western Japan, has left 9 people dead and more than 30 others missing.

In Nara Prefecture in western Japan, an overflowing river washed away 2 houses on Saturday night. 4 of the 11 people who lived there were taken to a hospital. One was confirmed dead. 7 people are still missing.

In neighboring Wakayama Prefecture, one person was found dead in a house which was buried under a mudslide early on Sunday morning. 3 more houses were also destroyed by a landslide. 5 people are missing.

NHK has learned that 9 people are dead and 32 missing in western Japan. 94 people were injured in 18 prefectures in central and western Japan.
Torrential rain continues to pound the Kii Peninsula and neighboring areas with moist air still streaming into the tropical storm. Some areas had more than 50 millimeters of rain in one hour on Sunday morning.

Thanks for the great map, Pat. Didn't know this was going to be such a prolific rainmaker.

Death toll continues to rise, with the following headline from NHK stating 24 dead and 54 missing across the country (Japan):
全国で24人死亡 54人不明

Some of the video being put out now are showing nearly small villages under water, crazy! It's astounding the amount of damage this tropical storm has caused.

Talas could be the deadliest typhoon to hit Japan since Tokage in 2004. Tokage left 99 dead or missing.

The last typhoon to kill more than 100 in Japan was Super Typhoon Tip in 1979. Tip left 113 dead or missing.

I see JMA have a special portal now for Talas - not seen that before with a storm. Terrible tragedy!

Thanks for that!

This still blows my mine though..

Especially over a wide area of the Kii Peninsula (Kii Hanto), the total amount of the precipitation from 17 JST, 30 August exceeded 1,000 mm. The observing station at Kamikitayama-village in Nara Prefecture observed 1,652.5 mm rainfall in 72 hours, hitting the record high in Japan. The total amount of the precipitation at the station reached 1805.5 mm and precipitation amount in some areas was estimated to be over 2,000 mm based on Radar/Raingauge Analyzed Precipitation.

Seems almost definite that Talas will be retired.

This is just tragic.

Having experienced "ketsana" in 2009, I know how the people of japan are feeling right now.

My prayers go out to all the casualties and victims of "talas"...
