Interestingly, NOAA flew several recon missions into Hilary once the weakening phase started. Apparently the institutions that program our forecast models funded these, hoping to learn more about the weakening phase of EPAC hurricanes. I suppose it's to improve the models' decay forecasts and reduce false alarms for places like Hawaii and Baja. If anything though, I think the airplanes found Hilary weakened more slowly than we would have expected. Yesterday she was clearly a dead, naked remnant low - but the aircraft found a 45mph tropical storm!
