I guess you are already feeling the winds from Nesat. Even the storm passes south of HK and proceeds to Hainan, the winds are going to be freaky in your place. Stay safe, everyone!

Yeah getting squally here in Hong Kong now. Just saw a large tree branch snap off and crash onto the pavement below, luckily no-one was underneath it. May well have some interesting filming opportunities tomorrow morning!

The No. 8 Southeast Gale or Storm Signal, was issued at 4:40 a.m. Hong Kong Time.

Right now here in Yuen Long (Northwestern part of Hong Kong) wind are quite strong. There are some reports of objects and trees down in Hong Kong.

Winds are strong in our area too, but still very little rain. Have just been up on the roof to secure one or two things and could hardly walk against the wind. I have a feeling that Nesat took the Hong Kong Observatory by surprise - when I checked the website at 2am they said that unless Nesat intensified significantly or took a more northerly track, the chance of a No. 8 signal was very low.

At Ngong Ping they had strongest gust of 168kmh, Tate's Cairn 131kmh and even Cheung Chau 127kmh. A bit breezy!

Bulletin issued at 08:45 HKT 29/Sep/2011

Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The No. 8 Southeast Gale or Storm Signal is in force.

This means that winds with mean speeds of 63 kilometres per hour or more are expected from the southeast quarter.

At 9 a.m., Typhoon Nesat was centred about 350 kilometres south-southwest of Hong Kong (near 19.6 degrees north 112.5 degrees east) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 22 kilometres per hour in the general direction of Hainan Island and Leizhou.

According to the present forecast track, Nesat is closest to Hong Kong within these few hours, passing around 350 kilometres south-southwest of Hong Kong. Gale winds are expected to persist this morning and there will also be squally showers. The number 8 gale or storm signal will remain in force this morning.

Under the influence of Nesat's broad circulation, many areas of Hong Kong continue to be affected by gale winds this morning. In the past hour, the maximum gusts recorded at Cheung Chau, Tai Mei Tuk and Star Ferry were 116, 97 and 85 kilometres per hour respectively.

I feel HKO have raised SS8 due to a couple of incidents. A barge became loose in harbour crashing into the seafront and scaffolding collapsing on a couple of buildings.

So its probably precautionary

Yeah it's a smart idea they raised signal 8. My local bus stop is buried under huge tree branches and kids / vulnerable could easily get blown down by wind out there. Remember lots of high rise buildings in HK which help funnel and increase winds at street level!

I feel Nesat intensified as it approaches Hainan. The eye became more defined and round. Not surprised if strong TS-force winds or even typhoon-force reach Hongkong. Only good thing is that the heavy convection is situated south that's why rains wouldn't be that heavy over there. Stay safe!

TV Update from HKO said NESAT have developed into a Severe Typhoon?

It does surprise or even shock me as have never really experience a direct hit Typhoon that NESAT although 350KM away can prooduce gusts of over 160kmh on high ground here in HK and cause some damage. I would dread to think what would happen if a Typhoon did hit HK.

The lowest pressure I could find during Nesat was 963mb in Casiguran. However, shortly afterwards, the station went down. Unfortunately, it was down during Nalgae as well.
