MED: Subtropical Cyclone over the Mediterranean Sea

#1 Postby DanieleItalyRm » Tue Sep 04, 2012 9:37 am

Good morning,
Initially, some models, saw the development of a Mediterranean hurricane..
Estofex (European Storm Forecast): "It is interesting to note that at this moment several models develop it into a hurricane-like structure (e.g. warm core and eye) on Monday, and the currently unusually high sea surface temperatures would assist such development."

This will not be verified, but it was formed, however, a small storm with tropical caracteristics.
A storm circulation move over warm water of Italian coast (26-27°C, 28°C south Tyrrhenian).
probably weakening in the next hours:

Looks subtropical to me. I personally think this is Gordon's remnants. Hey, it has happened before!

I think it could be Kirk's remnants, Gordon was about 2 weeks ago it probably dissipated by now.

Guys, I do not think is the remains of Gordon. This depression has developed over the Mediterranean Sea:

During late yesterday evening, depression acquired new convection, and with his side more 'active hits the southern Latium, Rome and Latina including, where they fall showers and many lightning nightclubs. On the coasts of Latina wind reach 30 knots:

During the late-night (03:15), the Polar Satellite is clearly visible on the southern Lazio, the cluster of thunderstorms in the center of the depression:

This morning, the small depression acquired unusual convection, that looks like a very small hurricane. Moves southeast and weakens quickly at Naples ..

Yep, Kirk remnants went in Iceland a few days ago with relatively strong winds.
Anyway I have seen more interesting things in Mediterranean last years than this low, but yes, there are a lot of lows that are at least partially tropical.

I know well that, in the Mediterranean, there have been many events most 'beautiful and strong of that, However, you also follow simple tropical depressions in the open Atlantic Ocean, and it is my duty to follow that too that being near inhabited coastlines.
You have noticed the convection in the center of the depression in this picture?

And especially I'm interested to know what this is. It is become in a Very small cyclone (midget) of just 50 km in diameter ..
