Sat Jul 5 2014

More than 120,000 homes and businesses in the Maritimes are without electricity Saturday morning as post-tropical storm Arthur makes its way into the region. The storm was downgraded from hurricane status with sustained winds of about about 110 km/h as it approached landfall in the Yarmouth area of Nova Scotia.

The number of power outages in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick has climbed rapidly since the storm made landfall in Digby County around 7:30 AT. In Nova Scotia, more than 73,000 were affected by power outages as of 9:30 AT, stretching from Yarmouth in the southwest to Halifax and the Annapolis Valley.

In Neow Brunswick, the number of people without NB Power service more than doubled to 51,000 customers between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.
The Fredericton region is the hardest hit in New Brunswick with 30,000 outages. More than 9,000 customers in the Woodstock area also lost power.

Outages in the range of 2,300 to 3,200 customers were reported in St. Stephen, Moncton and Rothesay.
The city of Fredericton was urging people to stay off ctiy streets and roads Saturday because of the number of trees down.
"If at all possible, residents are being asked to stay off the roads. If you have to be out on the roads, please use extreme caution," said a notice from city officials. "Trees are blocking roads; traffic lights are out in many areas of the city."

CBC meteorologist Peter Coade said the centre of the storm was over land by 7:30 a.m. AT. Coade said Arthur appears to have made landfall in the Digby County area north of Yarmouth, Winds ahead of the storm were gusting to 95 km/h at Baccaro Point in southwest Nova Scotia.

SoArthur is causing problems for you up in Canada and Nova Scotia. Thanks for the report and stay safe.

What has struck me about Arthur is the fact the sustained winds, and peak gusts, along the Maine/New Brunswick border into Central New Brunswick have been nearly as strong as those recorded where the centre actually made landfall in SW Nova Scotia. Heck places to the right in NS, like Halifax, actually seem to have had less wind. We were not expecting such here as usually the stronger winds are found on the east side of the track.

Anyone have reports of what the tidal surge or river bore was in Bay of Fundy? I know one storm many years ago had a 6 ft tidal bore come up the river at Moncton. I have seen a normal bore there with no unusually high tides of about 6" just come roaring up the river.

I'm in Yarmouth, and I'll say that this is the most damaging hurricane we've experienced here since anyone can remember. Usually we get hit late September or early October when the trees have lost their leaves already, so to have these winds with the trees still fully leaved has been pretty disastrous. Hundreds of trees and branches down all around the town, some hitting houses and cars, bringing down wires etc. We've been out of power since about 7 am, not sure when we'll get it back. A couple trees down in our yard too and our driveways partially blocked. Luckily it hit around low tide, so no surge to deal with. Nice big waves though. Anyway the worst of it seems to have passed, but I'll try and keep you all updated as long as my phone still has battery power.

Two medium sized trees down here, a large tree starting to lean in my yard alone. I agree with Cainer worst hurricane related storm I've experienced here since the Hybridstorm of November 2001 and purely tropical would be since Bob in 1991.

No reports yet, though the center is nearing Moncton now:

Based on the structure, maybe the ET transition might have been as early as 0600Z (6 hours before operational). We'll see in the best track.

Did Arthur make landfall in Nova Scotia as a TC operationally? Or did it stay over water?

I'm not sure about the TC aspect, however the system did make landfall there according to this:

That has 1030Z as the landfall time, while 1200Z was the ET time according to the NHC data. So if those are correct, Arthur did make a second landfall as a tropical storm. But I expect the ET time to be moved up (I think it will be either 0600Z or 0900Z).

Was a very interesting a rare storm from start to finish! Still would not use this hurricane to determine what to expect for the rest of the season whatsoever! Just cause Arthur formed and became what it did means nothing for the rest of the season, in fact I would not be surprised at all if the rest of the season is just as dead and quiet as last year still.

But it could also like some seasons be an early indicator of what the steering currents are going to be later in the season

I've just posted some pics of local damage, mainly down trees and signs, on my weather blog. Most of the flooding subsided before I could get out this morning:

http://hybridstorm-weatherblog.blogspot.ca/

I find it interesting how some of the large tress broke, rather than were uprooted.

Oh and after I went into town, St. Stephen, to get some of those pics I couldn't get home (a usual fifteen to twenty minute drive) for three hours because people from the surrounding areas to the north still are without power and were lining up for gas and groceries.

Luckily it wasn't too bad of a storm, since it caused only minimal damage and 0 deaths, even though it caused impacts along the east coast during 4th of July celebrations. It was interesting to track though. Bye, Arthur!

Hurricanes are an amazing natural phenomena. While many are spiraling pits of evil that kill people or cause devastation, some are tame and stay clear of land.

I wish for you to :Bcool:

Arthur caused more than minimum damage here. It was actually the worst TC related storm we've experienced in over a decade. For example a couple hundred thousand people in Maine, New Brunswick & Nova Scotia will likely still be without power until the end of the week.
