the wind obs mean that 75 kts is a good estimate for the landfall intensity

seeing even higher winds now. Maybe 80 to 85 kts at landfall

Seriously, what, if anything, is JTWC looking at?

:uarrow: Muroto had a max sustained at 40.2m/s (78kt) and a wind gust of 52.5m/s (102kt). Kochi had a minimum pressure of 971hPa but it likely missed the center a little bit to the east.

I'd agree, the intensity would've probably been around 80kt sustained with a minimum pressure of around 960hPa.

the weather station was elevated. However, this was clearly at least 75 kts at landfall as sustained winds onshore would be less than those at marine exposure

Tomogashima just recorded 34m/s (66kt) sustained and 45m/s (87kt) gust. It's at 45m ASL so not terribly high compared to Muroto. Halong is still packing a punch despite landfall and may still be pretty close to typhoon-strength.

Interesting those wind obs. JMA and JTWC clearly underestimated this storm's peak saying only 65 and 60 knots.

Halong is weakening now.
