I disagree Frank, and we certainly appreciate any and all posting of opinions by the pro-mets. There were no posts here that would lead to liability issues, in my opinion, so I'm really not sure where you're coming from.

Think a few people here took a look at a weak looking satellite pic and may have under estimated this storms strength wont be surprised to see a lot of wind damage in the final wash up.

At 100 am HST, 1100 UTC, the center of tropical storm Iselle was located near latitude 19.0 north, longitude 155.1 west. Iselle is moving toward the west near 7 mph, 11 km/h, and this motion is expected to continue through Saturday, with some increase in forward speed.

Maximum sustained winds are near 60 mph, 100 km/h, with higher gusts. Weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 1001 mb, 29.56 inches.

HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND

WIND

Tropical storm conditions are occurring on the Big Island and Maui county, and will continue through the night. Tropical storm conditions are expected on Oahu and Kauai county later today.

RAINFALL

Rainfall totals of 5 to 8 inches, with isolated maximum amounts to 12 inches, are expected along the track of Iselle. These rains could cause life-threatening flash floods as well as rock and mud slides.

SURF

Swells generated by Iselle are producing very large and damaging mainly along east and south facing shores of the Big Island. This damaging surf will diminish later today.

STORM SURGE

The combination of storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters. The water could reach the following heights above ground if the peak surge occurs at the time of high tide,.

Big island windward and Kau, 1 to 2 ft.

Surge related flooding depends on the relative timing of the surge and the tidal cycle, and can vary greatly over short distances.

I think we are seeing what happens when an LLC runs smack into a very tall mountain. I wonder if anything except a weak MLC will make it to the other side?

Take a good look at the satellite loop above this post. The LLC is way west of Hawaii. It decoupled from the MLC. lt's the MLC that is making landfall on the island now. Center is near where my crosshairs are on the image below. This explains the sudden slow-down of the storm. It didn't slow down, it made landfall and is continuing west. It's the mid level center that is hanging way behind. Note the lower pressures on the west side of Hawaii.

The sustained wind at Mauna Kea's summit is now 34mph and from the south. Whatever circulation exists at 13,000 feet.... is west of Mauna Kea.

It flipped back to a southeast wind just after I hit post.

... and now it's an east wind. I don't know anymore lol. It's been an east wind for most of the night, seeing that south wind was very odd.

The eyewall came in right over the lava flats where the magma empties into the ocean.

Where the eye came in is barren land and the volcanic east slope of Muana Loa. There's nothing there.
