From BWS:

Lights are flickering...

WNW winds
Commissioner's point: 88 g 112 kt
St. David's 54 g 84 kt
Causeway 72 g 98 kt

.... BWS building taking a beating in these WNW winds... even with hurricane shutters we are feeling a breeze in the building. My office faces WNW, as does all operations of forecasters and observers. We are not as jovial as we were in the north side of Gonzalo

How likely is it that this was Cat 3 at landfall?

81 kt sustained (10-min) equates to about 90 kt (1-min), or solid Cat 2 winds. So MAYBE that back eyewall had Cat 3 winds somewhere.

That's that back side band. Probably some forcing from the front.

The front is still nowhere near Gonzalo, that's just pure pressure gradient.

Once there is daylight tomorrow morning, we will probably see widespread damage with those kind of gusts...

think it is trough interaction. Fay also had strong winds west of the center, as did Igor 4 years ago

if this structure remains, Canada would get hurricane conditions early Sunday

Yes but those winds are from an elevated reporting station, probably at the surface wind gusts are probably closer to the 120 mph, but still very strong nonetheless.

OK yes that would make sense regarding the trough.

Now the debate will begin again over the landfall intensity. 95 kt seems most reasonable again with the stronger backside, but any stronger winds opens back up 100 kt.

I have the weather channel on at the moment and heard 112 mph, assuming this is sustained given the 108 mph mentioned on here earlier.
