MED: HANSGEORG - Subtropical Storm

#1 Postby DanieleItalyRm » Wed Jan 23, 2013 11:50 am

A strong cyclone (989 Hpa) formed this night over Mediterranean Sea.
Expected 100-120 Km/h winds and 7-8 metres waves.
The cyclone is intensified by a warm flux from North Africa:

While I don't doubt tropical or subtropical cyclones can and have formed in the Mediterranean. No one wants to get off their butt and investigate them it seems.

Where'd it get a name from? Have I missed something recently? I don't remember anyone naming MED storms, or NORATLANTIC storms.

No official organization does, but many storms that form into Med. Cyclones tend to originate from windstorms, and one of the meteorological groups (I think in Germany) names windstorms. That's how "Rolf" got its name.

The Norwegian Meteorological Service or the FU-Berlin (Institute Of Meteorology) in Germany give names to systems, In even years they give female names to high or low pressures, and odd years, like 2013 they give male names.
