It's unfortunate the infrared images from this page are so overexposed.

These are a little better:

That's what I'm talking about, last-minute intensification. I wonder what the DT numbers are right now. I hope those people living in high-rise buildings will take precautionary measures.

Ishigakijima reporting sustained winds of 86 mph and gusts have reached 132 mph as SOULIK moves slowly away. Moriyama reporting 71 mph sustained, gusts have reached 124 mph.

Does anyone know if these winds are 10-min or 1-min? I think they're probably 10-min but I'm not sure.

If your source is JMA, then most likely those sustained winds are 10 min sustained...

wow! that's very close to their estimate.

Scale -
Intensity Strong
Center position N24°20'(24.3°)
E123°05'(123.1°)
Direction and speed of movement NW 20km/h(12kt)
Central pressure 950hPa
Maximum wind speed near the center 40m/s(80kt)
Maximum wind gust speed 60m/s(115kt)
Area of 50kt winds or more NE220km(120NM)
SW150km(80NM)
Area of 30kt winds or more NE520km(280NM)
SW390km(210NM)

it's getting nearer and nearer to landfall... and the convection in the western portion of Soulik is thickening now based on the latest satellite imagery...

Starting to look like the western flank is getting pushed in now. Enter the Taiwan Mountains and there impact.

Already they squeezed out some tremendous rain totals.

The image below is the past 24hrs.

So those 132 mph gusts measured earlier are about 150 mph for us ... either number is impressive!

those are instantaneous gusts so i don't think they're subject to 1-min or 10-min rule... only the sustained winds are...
