BREAKING: The City of Norfolk has opened Norview High School as shelter for residents who need a place to ride out the storm. Residents who need transportation to the shelter should call (757) 441-5610. Residents are asked to bring personal items, sleeping bags, blankets and snacks. Pets are welcome.

Took a drive towards downtown. Nothing more eerie than driving on the freeway at night and seeing the green glow of transformers blowing in the distance. A lot of roads in Virginia Beach that don't even normally flood are closed/impassable. Folks are going to be talking about this storm for a long time. A lot of people are angry at the local mets because they feel they dropped the ball. I wouldn't go that far with it but I think they shouldn't have downplayed the storm as much as they did. Our local newspaper quite literally sounded the all clear on Wednesday. Very irresponsible reporting.

Checking in from Callahan, FL. My family and my home are intact! Lots of trees down in the neighborhood - but we just have a bunch of branches and stuff. We have had a bit of a perfect storm technologically speaking - our power is still out (thankful for our generator - but, oh, I miss a/c!), AT&T Wireless has several cell towers down, so no cell signal. Our landline (Windstream) is still down. Our Xfinity high speed internet was down until just a little while ago...but that is back working, yay! We had nearly 7" of rain from Matthew but my anemometer chose a terrible time to quit working (showed max wind of 13 mph...uhm...not! I think we probably had a couple of gusts around 60 or so). That storm surge map was downright scary the night before Matthew's arrival! At one point, we were looking at 6'+ behind my house I am waaaaaaaaaay inland...but apparently not that far from the rushing water perspective.

There were some areas in FL with pretty severe damage - but nothing compared to what could have been had that eyewall actually made landfall. Our hearts ache for the families in Haiti.

So all in all, I think Florida really got lucky with this one...and I'm forever thankful that my family and home are fine.

NWS in Wakefield has issued a Flash Flood Emergency for parts of Bertie, Chowan, and Perquimans Counties. Haven't seen that before.

No word at all from where it made landfall. Les Cayes was out of the eyewall and Jeremie is on the north part of the peninsula. No tidal surge and they had downslope flow, so mudslides not a major issue there

Is there a good website or Twitter feed to keep up on Haiti news?

I can get all the information about the U.S. that I want, but I am very concerned about Haiti, especially if this is true.

Just entered the backside of the storm. Winds much higher than all day.

I'll say! I luckily did not lose power all day. I was sitting in the recliner and napping. I had the windows open all day, because for the most part it had been mainly a rain event for us, and had died off. then boom! i was woken from my nap by a huge blast of air coming from the back side of the house, and and winds were sustained higher than what he has all day. WECT said that there was recorded 100mph+ gusts around that time.

Checking in from Norfolk Naval base. We're getting hit much harder than the new outlets let on. Tons of roads underwater or impassible, we're losing trees left and right, and the water is shin deep at the end of our culdesac. 50k without power (I'm one of the lucky ones). Haven't heard any reports of injuries or fatalities but I've really only been watching out on twitter.

Not sure. I know they sent the Jima to Haiti and had two other ships on standby. A large chunk of the fleet is already out to sea.

Some of the biggest impacts of Matthew will be felt days after it's gone. For example, the Neuse at Kinston is forecast to reach Floyd levels by the end of the week as all the water from central NC works its way down the system. Many rivers or creeks are already above record levels, many of which were set during Floyd. This is a truly historic event for the Carolinas.

One of the weather guys admitted that the storm came about 80 miles further north than anticipated. We're basically nearing the former eye wall. Winds will be stronger on the back end as it finally turns east but at least the rain should let up. This has been one sleepless night. Sustained 50 mph wind with gusts to hurricane force. Between the whistling and the transformer outside that keeps flashing, I imagine I'll be up till daybreak.
