It only seems that way. Barbados was hardly affected by anything. Yes, the center of Harvey went right over us, but it was a weak and disorganized system at the time. And we got some squally weather from Maria's outer bands, but hardly anything worth mentioning, especially in light of what other islands got. Actually, most of the southeastern islands of the archipelago were untouched by anything major.

Just trying to stop the propagation of fake news.

It was a Cat 6 I tell ya....a Cat 6..LOL...no no..back to the thread...I sure hope DR is spared Maria...

I think it's partly a safety issue. Were the planes to crash, they could injure or kill people on the ground.

In particular the turbulence increases *tremendously* over land. Hurricanes are a lot less turbulent than you'd think because the ocean is so flat and doesn't have terrain. But land slows down the air at the surface in complicated ways, creating a lot of turbulence, to the point where it's not safe for anyone to fly in it.

Quite. I didn't even consider that. And I used to be a student pilot! (I guess that's why I never got my PPL. )

Have been watching the video feeds out of PR this morning...as well as what has come out from Dominica. This is one powerful storm and my thoughts are with all in her path. For those on the board who live there or have family and/or friends affected by Maria, please stay safe.

That said, does anyone know when the eye is Expected to exit PR? Or if it has already? I apologize if this is something that has been addressed but I was looking through the thread and did not see.

From what I read on the 11:00 update it sounds like another 2-3 hours.

It does look like a more westerly movement, but we won't know anything until Recon enters the storm with the radar down. Hopefully it is just a power or technical issue and not a destroyed system.

20 feet above the all time record on this river in PR, all in a matter of a few hours? This is going to wind up horrifying in the aftermath. This is on the north facing slope on the north side of the island West of San Juan.

The flooding and mudslides are going to be catastrophic.

I've been checking many of the river heights in Puerto Rico and it's insane how several of them spiked past the record level...

Cell service is down. Figured it would be, can't get a hold of anyone. Just a quick busy or can't complete call at this time. One of my cousins is going to try and get through on a land line, I am guessing that won't work either. Waiting to find out how everyone is to me is the worse part of the storm.

That huge spike might indicate a mudslide.

That is far beyond terrifying.

Colors of lost purpose on the canvas of irrelevance

Not a meteorologist, in fact more of an idiot than anything. You should probably check with the NHC or a local NWS office for official information.
