Re: ATL: BRET - Tropical Storm - Discussion

#581 Postby hurricanes1234 » Tue Jun 20, 2017 6:47 am

Hi everyone,

All warnings have been discontinued for Trinidad and Tobago. I remained awake for the majority of the rain, and in the northwestern part of Trinidad, the peak of the action lasted around three hours. There was very little lightning but the rain was persistent and heavy, accompanied by strong, gusty winds that changed direction rapidly.

Thankfully there was no flooding in my neighbourhood but I understand that several places across the country, including in Tobago as well, have suffered severe inundation and/or wind damage to property. A number of these same places also contained downed trees, some of which contributed to numerous localised power outages, in addition to the wind itself. The television is full of images and videos sent in by amateurs, showing the extent of the damages caused.

The good thing is that no deaths or injuries were reported, at least none so far as of the 7 AM local news update this morning. However, with the cloud shield of Bret still very close, I wouldn't be surprised if we got a few residual showers today. In fact, the sky already looks to be covering again and wind seems to be blowing every so often ...

Calls for help: Emergency crews responding

...worst affected in south, east
Published on Jun 20, 2017, 6:19 am AST
By The Multimedia Desk

:rarrow: http://www.trinidadexpress.com/20170620 ... responding

AT least 60 distress calls were received by the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) overnight, and emergency response personnel are being deployed to the areas.

Citizens reported blown-off roofs, down utility poles, fallen trees, blocked roads, flooded homes and debris on the roadway.

There were no immediate reports of deaths of injuries.

The worst hit areas are in the Penal/Debe and Rio Claro/Mayaro regions, says Captain Neville Wint, the deputy ceo of the ODPM.

There is also damage in Toco and rising waters in the water courses in Chaguanas.

The Guaracara and Marchan rivers in south Trinidad have overflowed in some areas.

In Mayaro, there were ten reports of roofs being blown off, flooding and fallen trees with live fallen electricity wires along the Naparima/Mayaro and Tabaquite roads.

Fallen trees and utility poles, and a collapsed house were reported in Tobago where 17 emergency shelters were activated. At least 13 people used the shelters overnight.

Wint said that response teams were now in the recovery and damage assessment stage, with the intention of bringing relief to affected people.

Wint said that the low tide on Tuesday would greatly assist in the run off from flood swollen rivers.

T&TEC has also deployed repair crews and say that power will be restored during the course of the day.

At 5a.m. the Tropical Storm Warning was lifted for T&T, Grenada and its dependencies, with the storm now tracking over Venezuela.

Tropical Storm Bret Discussion Number 8
NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL AL022017
1100 AM AST Tue Jun 20 2017

The cloud pattern associated with Bret is becoming somewhat
elongated due to southerly wind shear, and consequently, T-numbers
from TAFB and SAB have decreased a little bit. However, Bret
produced sustained surface winds of 40 kt when it passed south of
Grenada several hours ago. On this basis, the initial intensity
is kept at 40 kt in this advisory, but these winds are occuring
only to the north of the center. The intensity forecast remains
unchanged, and the cyclone is expected to weaken as it moves toward
a hostile environment of strong southerly shear caused by an
upper-trough in the central Caribbean Sea. Bret will most likely
degenerate into a low or an open trough in a day or so, if not
sooner. This is consistent with most of the dynamical models.

Although the center is difficult to locate, the best estimate of
the initial motion is toward the west-northwest or 290 degrees at 18
kt. The cyclone is well embedded within the easterly flow around the
Atlantic subtropical ridge, and Bret will likely continue on this
same general motion until dissipation. This forecast in the middle
of the guidance envelope, and is consistent with the previous NHC
track forecast.

Agreed !

though getting people to work together is tough since they all think the other is trying to best them.. lol.

I always wanted to start a project to have not a inch left of the carrib and coastal areas without radar coverage. wouldn't take but some cooperation lol

IIRC there was some 10-15+ years ago about the NWS assisting the Bahamas in getting some radars installed on the east side of their island chain. I always had a weenie fantasy of seeing doppler radars built on Anguilla, Grand Turk, Great Inagua, Mayaguana, Long Island, Cat Island, Eleuthera, and Great Abaco. Or at least about half of those places. LOL

Southern tip of the Dominican Republic would be another good place--you'd have full radar coverage of the central Caribbean.

The one that's already there in Punta Cana provides really good coverage. It's just been out of service for a LOOOOOOONG time now. :(

Between the US radar at Gitmo and the Cuban radar at Gran Piedra, Haiti gets pretty decent coverage, so it's not that big of a deal that Haiti will never be able to afford to have a weather radar.

Remnants Of Bret Discussion Number 9
NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL AL022017
500 PM AST Tue Jun 20 2017

Satellite images and surface observations indicate that Bret no
longer has a closed circulation and has degenerated into a tropical
wave. The wave is likely producing 30 to 35 knot sustained winds
over water in squalls to the north of the area of minimum pressure.
The wave is expected to continue moving westward across the
Caribbean where strong southerly shear prevails, and regeneration of
the system is not anticipated. Most of the models agree and
dampen the wave in a day or two.

This is the last advisory on Bret, and additional information on
this system can be found in the Tropical Weather Outlook issued by
the National Hurricane Center, and in the High Seas Forecasts issued
by the National Weather Service, under AWIPS header NFDHSFAT1, WMO
header FZNT01 KWBC.

With the obvious strong southerly continental flow from South America blowing it out, this still has remarkable convective curvature.

R.I.P. Bret. It appears that the shear and the Venezuelan land & mountains got to him. I liked how it was an early season TC that struck an unusual place though! Even weirder... the two most recent storms to strike Venezuela are now named Bret ('93 and the obvious one).

Hurricanes are an amazing natural phenomena. While many are spiraling pits of evil that kill people or cause devastation, some are tame and stay clear of land.

Bret was an interesting storm to track. Though it was moving fast and more south than usual, it managed to pull it off in a despite the time of year. I'm glad too that there hasn't been (yet) any fatalities.

Unfortunately, one fatality was confirmed yesterday: a guy who attempted to run across a bridge during the storm in order to reach his home, then slipped.
