BOB: Invest 97B (IMD Deep Depression)

#1 Postby doomhaMwx » Mon Oct 09, 2017 6:10 am

A system centered over India's West Bengal has just been designated Invest 97B by the Navy (classified as a Deep Depression by the IMD)...

IMD:
Latest observations, Doppler Weather Radar, Kolkata & Satellite imageries indicate that the
depression over Gangetic West Bengal moved west-northwestwards with a speed of about 15 kmph
in past 03 hours. It intensified into a deep depression and lay centred at 0830 hrs IST of today, the
09th October, 2017 over Gangetic West Bengal near Latitude 22.5º N and Longitude 88.4 ºE, close to
Kolkata. The system is very likely to move slowly west-northwestwards initially during next 24 hours
and move northwards thereafter.

This system made landfall near the Bangladesh-West Bengal yesterday and is still maintaining a rather impressive satellite and radar presentation...
Although this system was designated as an Invest just today, and the IMD only upgraded it to (Deep)Depression also just today, it may have already been a Tropical Depression or perhaps even a Tropical Storm when it made landfall yesterday...

Image

It should've been designated at least as an Invest a couple of days ago or so though... ASCAT passed over the system on the 7th @ 15Z and already showed/hinted a closed circulation with mostly 20kt winds near the center at that time... Radar image from Bangladesh @ around 06Z yesterday showed an impressive system with a well-defined circulation center crossing the coast near the Bangladesh-West Bengal border, while the 14Z Kolkata radar image yesterday shows that it has maintained this feature hours after landfall... I have also included an IR satellite image of the system @ 14Z yesterday...

A station in Kolkata, India, which is close to the system's center, recorded a Sea-Level Pressure(SLP) of 996mb @ 06Z today—lowest SLP observation associated with 97B that I have seen so far... A SLP near 1001mb was recorded in Mongla, Bangladesh @ 12Z yesterday... The highest wind speed observations yesterday near the landfall location that I could find were only ranging from 20 to 30kph though... (note that all of these weather obs are 3-hourly)...

That looks like a legit TC at landfall.
This should be classified as a TC in postseason analysis.

Possibly the most impressive system I've seen post-landfall.

Here's an IR satellite animation of the northern BoB from Oct 6 00Z to Oct 11 00Z, showing the development of this system...

There are some "jumps" on the animation due to some missing image files on IMD's archive...

Very impressive. Wasn't this the remnants of TD 23W which made landfall over Vietnam days ago?

I wonder why JTWC didn't do anything.

Nope, not the remnants of 23W... This one developed and made landfall a few days before 23W hit Vietnam...
