Sorry for the confusion, it was my Mom that was in ICU with Covid, I already edit it.

When is recon expected to head back out? This looks like it has finally hit hurricane intensity, and it still has a few more hours over water.

Edit: AF304 is on the runway. If it’s quick enough, we’ll get a center pass just before landfall.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

NDG, wow....hope you're feeling better. Any visit to the ICU is scary but two weeks sound like things were "touch & go". Beyond that, this season has been long-winded (pun fully intended lol) and it surely does take a bit more oomf to get my interest for any weak or short lived systems. Gamma on the other hand at least has a classic appearance and for the moment appears to be deepening at a fast clip. I think it's a borderline hurricane intensity now. When is the next recon?
(Just read your edit; hope your mom is okay)

Kinda surprised they didn't upgrade this. They upgraded Nana to cat 1 and Gamma has much better evidence for Cat 1 than Nana ever did

I am in no way a professional. Take what I say with a grain of salt as I could be totally wrong. Please refer to the NHC, NWS, or SPC for official information.

I second your feelings NDG, Covid is such a disaster. I lost my 55 yr old father to it a month ago. I hope your mom is recovering.

I think so too that Gamma is a Cat 1 now

This is for sure a Cat 1, I would even give it a high Cat 1 at this point. Models should had listened to me and bumped up their forecasts days ago haha.

Sorry about your father, RIP. Prayer for all your family.
I am glad my mom took our advice for her to go to emergency when she started running short in breath and was already with no appetite for 4 days. I really believe the early treatment on her helped saving her life. She lost 15 pounds and is now needing physical therapy now that she is at home, still has very little energy.

Sorry for going out the thread subject, Mods.

I’m going to predict 70kt/975mb as the intensity AF304 will find when it arrives, assuming Gamma hasn’t made landfall by that point.

Glad to see they are sending it back in, it should catch at least the eastern developing eyewall as it makes landfall in a couple of hours or so.

Thanks NDG! I'm glad your mom got treated early. My dad went to the hospital when it was already too late, had to go on the ventilator. Sorry mods for the off topic just in case as well. Prayers for all affected by this disease.

Recon is having connection issues again. It hasn’t transmitted in over 20 minutes.

From a TD/weak TS to a borderline Cat1 in only 19 hours. If this had a full 48 hours over water like some of the models originally showed, Gamma would've likely become a Cat 2/3.

The most recent advisory for Gamma had central pressure of 983 millibars, which is rather low for a 70 mph tropical storm.

Based on past storm comparison and continued rapid strengthening, I'd estimate 70 kt for the intensity (pressure 978 mb).
