I really believe Harold made it's final landfall as a category 5 due to it's satellite presentation but there is land data that support this or not?

As Tropical Cyclone Harold approached the island nation of Vanuatu in the early morning hours of April 6, Vaisala Global Lightning Dataset GLD360 detected the Enveloped Eyewall Lightning (EEL) Signature. The EEL Signature is a phenomenon that was defined by Vaisala researchers and refers to active lightning that completely wraps around the eyewall of very strong tropical cyclones. Cyclone Harold made landfall with sustained winds of at least 125 knots shortly after the EEL Signature appeared. Around 100 tropical cyclones develop over the world’s oceans each year, with about 20 of them reaching peak wind speeds in excess of 113 knots. Fewer than half of these tropical cyclones then exhibit the EEL Signature, making it a very rare phenomenon.

Someone shared this composite image and loop of the lightning data on social media. CTTO.

Looks like the eyewall has recovered....again: https://rammb-data.cira.colostate.edu/t ... 070541.gif

This storm just does not want to die. We might see a small burst of intensification if that eye clears out some more, but I doubt Harold will be able to pull it off for long.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Going to be passing pretty close to Fiji now, if not just clipping it.

SMAP from about 6 hours ago had 101 kt 10 minute winds, which is about 115 kt 1 minute winds using the 0.88 conversion. Quite the recovery considering how much like garbage it looked yesterday. JTWC once again appears to have a good handle on intensity, although I wager it probably fell a little more and then rebounded instead of just falling down to this intensity.

The sub-anvil backing shear is still pushing it so some degree, but microwave structure has made a big rebound with a larger core, actually reminding me somewhat of second peak Yutu '18. Perhaps the greater moment of inertia from the larger core will help fend off dry air intrusions better in the near term. There is still some lurking near the western portion of the CDO, which can be seen again on band 8.

Below is the latest Fiji radar. Center passed west of Fiji over the past several hours. Harold underwent an ERC yesterday morning. The eye started returning early this morning but is now open SW-W. Definitely a lot weaker than at its peak. Heavy rain and TS wind for Fiji as it passes.

The eye is starting to open back up again. It might be able to regain marginal Cat 4 status if this continues.

The cold convection is expanding (kind of) radially and rotating, and the eye is warming some. Seems like it's trying to organize again. Can't find recent microwave passes going over the core unfortunately

It's been struggling to clear the eye out for a long time, unlikely to recover

Yeah interestingly when it comes down to clearing the eye, it really struggled...

And it looks like it’s starting to become extratropical. Goodbye Harold.
