If it gets upgraded in the postseason, it will still go on the official record. Will be interesting to see if they do it - it certainly looks tropical on visible.

I do have to wonder if they're holding off on upgrading this and 98L (which are both tropical storms in my book) because they don't wish to use the last name on a short-lived system far from the US.

I hope they call it a TS (or SS) in post. I feel like we got cheated out of advisories for the only system (that I'm aware of) to strengthen on approach to Portugal.

Definitely looks namable to me, better than some of the STS we get. I think NHC is desperately hoping invests just go away at this point so they can rest their hands from writing advisories

Might get the post season upgrade treatment if they consider convection deep enough. But far worse has been classified

Not a meteorologist, in fact more of an idiot than anything. You should probably check with the NHC or a local NWS office for official information.

Maybe it'll get named at the last second before it goes over Portugal (in the same fashion as Imelda 2019, which was barely designated just before it made landfall). I'd like to see us push further into the Greek alphabet.

Is there any history of a landfalling tropical or subtropical cyclone impacting Europe with >34kt winds? I know Vince made landfall on Spain, but it had weakened to a TD by then. This seems to be intensifying.

The 1842 Spain hurricane may have impacted Spain with >34kt winds but it seemed like it quickly turned extratropical after landfall, suggesting it wasn't completely tropical when it hit the coast.

another likely candidate for post season upgrade.

Seems like it made landfall on Portugal just south of Lisbon at about 1350z. Lisbon is reporting pressures of about 1005 mb and I found some surface obs to 30 or 35 mph somewhat removed from the center. Likely the MSW were much higher.

I agree that this deserves a post-season upgrade. Landfall intensity was probably 40 kt, based on ASCAT pass readings around 35 kt with low resolution. It probably weakened in winds on approach.

I'm confused. You think it made landfall? It seems offshore on radar?

Looking at that Radar I would say its still offshore. The tropical storm type low has been rotating within the larger low and is now moving NEish up the coast. Looks like it should move inland about halfway between Lisbon and Porto in the next couple of hours though.

That is clearly a tropical storm just offshore. Looks much better than either Wilfred or 22.

Maybe this could still steal Alpha from TD 22? Seems fitting the "Alpha" storm of 2020 would be an almost-unheard-of (sub)tropical storm directly hitting the European continent.

At that point I'd just feel bad for 22.

NHC will initiate advisories on Subtropical Storm Alpha, located near the coast of Portugal, at 1230 PM AST (1630 UTC).

Time to start feeling bad for 22 lol

I am in no way a professional. Take what I say with a grain of salt as I could be totally wrong. Please refer to the NHC, NWS, or SPC for official information.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Wait they actually named it in the end? Plot twist of the season. Not that it's undeserving, definitely a subtropical system (at least imo), saves them another post-season analysis.
