Has there been any data to suggest this has 35kt winds? If not I’d guess TS is the typo

Looks like it is dealing with some dry air. Lots of collapsing boundaries flying out of the NW side

NHC will initiate advisories on Tropical Depression Seventeen, located over the central tropical Atlantic, at 1100 AM EDT (1500 UTC).

Does anyone realize that since August 20th...there have only been 2 days where we didn't have a named system in the Atlantic Basin?

Wow, this developed far sooner than I expected. Based on the model runs over the last several days, I didn’t expect a TD/TS until this was closer to 50W.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

I think it has a chance to become a hurricane after it turns N/NE in several days. Probably will be on the weaker side until then

I am in no way a professional. Take what I say with a grain of salt as I could be totally wrong. Please refer to the NHC, NWS, or SPC for official information.

Why are the models extremely bearish with 17L. Is this storm going to be another flop, just like Nigel?

3 of the 4 hurricane models have a Cat 2+ with the storm becoming better organized at the end of the run. Only the HAFS-B is bearish. These hurricane models only go out to about 5 days and it'll likely be around longer than that as it turns N/NE, which could end up leading to better conditions.

I wouldn't call that "extremely bearish"

Ok peeps, the topic of this thread is to discuss about TD 17 / Phillippe later and not to talk about other members so let's stick the discussions to the topic. Thank you for the cooperation to keep Storm2k as one of the best sites in the internet about weather and the tropics.

Center is elongated on ascat. I think they called it a TD too early.

Wonder if this will be something similar to Ophelia 2011. Struggling TS throughout the MDR but once it turns north, it bombs out.

Thank goodness for the weak Bermuda high allowing 17 and others to recurve way out at sea, or else this season would have been more memorable for a lot more folks. Now just have to get through the CAG leg of the season before we close the books on this one.
