Why is the NRL site wrong often when it comes to WPAC tropical cyclones? It's slow to update the strength of storms. BTW, it looks better right now as a TD then when it was at 65 Knots inland.

It doesn't have the official intensities on it thats why. Was the last JTWC advisory set at 65kts? That would explain it.

Ok, now that that issue is cleared up, what's going on with the convection? Just look at the system now.

As expected the death toll has sadly gone up. That convection, well looking at the nearest sounding I can find to the position in the CMA MetArea bulletin it shows 2,900J/kg of CAPE. LLS (0-1km) was about 5m/s with DLS (0-6km) around 17.5m/s. That is enough deep level shear to allow some strong thunderstorms. (See http://www.estofex.org/guide/3_2_1.html)

Chinese typhoon toll passes 250

Typhoon Saomai, the most powerful storm to hit China in 50 years, killed at least 255 people as it tore through the country's south-east, state media said.

Another 160 people are still missing in the three provinces of Fujian, Zhejiang and Jiangxi, Xinhua news agency said.

Typhoon's toll rises to 295
2006-08-16

THE death toll from typhoon Saomai had risen to 295 in China by late Monday evening and is still likely to mount as another 94 people remain missing in Fuding, the worst hit city in China's southeast coastal province of Fujian.

The Fuding government said 178 people were confirmed dead by Monday night and 155 bodies had been retrieved. "On Monday alone, 59 bodies were discovered in seawater off Shacheng Harbor," said Cai Meisen, vice mayor of Fuding.

According to various sources, I've made a list of "billion dollar typhoons".

NOTE: These are based on U.S. dollars and at face value (meaning unadjusted for inflation).

However, I cannot guarantee these are accurate. The ones I'm not sure of, I'll mark with an asterisk. *

1959: Super Typhoon Vera $2 billion*

1974: Typhoon Gilda $1.5 billion

1984: Typhoon Ike $1 billion*

1990: Typhoon Abe $1.431 billion*

1991: Super Typhoon Mireille at least $3 billion (I've heard as high as $10 billion, but that might have been after adjusting)

1994: Super Typhoon Fred $1.6 billion

1996: Super Typhoon Herb $5.837 billion

1996: Super Typhoon Sally $1.5 billion

1997: Super Typhoon Winnie $4.139 billion

1998: Typhoon Vicki $3 billion*

1999: Super Typhoon Bart $5 billion

2000: Typhoon Prapiroon $6.01 billion*

2001: Typhoon Utor $2.98 billion*

2002: Typhoon Rusa $6 billion

2003: Super Typhoon Maemi $5.5 billion

2004: Typhoon Rananim $2.2 billion

2004: Super Typhoon Chaba $2 billion

2004: Super Typhoon Songda $6 billion

2004: Typhoon Tokage $2.3 billion

2005: Typhoon Talim $1.9 billion

2005: Typhoon Khanun $1.75 billion

2005: Typhoon Damrey $1.5 billion

2006: Super Typhoon Chanchu $1.2 billion

2006: Tropical Storm Bilis $3.328 billion

2006: Super Typhoon Saomai $1.5 billion

As you can see from my list above, the costliest typhoons are usually the ones that strike China, Korea, or Japan.

I should also point out that the majority of these storms were Category 1-2 at landfall.

So China or Japan have never been hit with a typhoon that makes more then 6.1 billion? So this means that Atlantic storms are the coastiest right? Also could Saomai price go up???

Severe Tropical Storm Bilis was 55kts at landfall earlier in the year.

Saomi looked better then Katrina or Rita at landfall...Still had a intact eyewall with deep convection around the eyewall reforming(Red on the IR) as it is about ready to make landfall. Thats a upper cat3 or lower cat4. I say 115 knots.

The death toll so far is no where near the death toll of Tropical Depression Winnie of 2004. That tropical cyclone killed 1,400 people as a TD. That is unreal that such a weak system can kill many more people then a Category 4 typhoon making landfall.

Bilis caused catastrophic flooding in some portions of China and Taiwan. You could also ask how did TS Allison do more damage than Hurricane Dennis?

Well it depends on where it hits of course and how big it is. The BBC report for STS Bilis quotes "Thousands of homes have been swept away, and large areas of farmland have been destroyed."
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/5185314.stm

The death toll was higher than for Saomai at over 500. It did also pass over Taiwan before reaching China

^No not quite.

It made landfall.
Went into central Texas.
Meandered back over Houston, and then moved offshore.

Alisson did her damage for all of 8 hours at my house...dropping 35 inches. Just being nitpicky.
