North Carolina Observations Thread
Well, less than 24 hours out from a possible landfall, and my barometer has dropped from 1023 to 1018 millibars (its always about two millibars higher than Cherry Point's for some reason). It's been fairly breezy today, but just twenty minutes ago when I stepped outside, it was dead calm.

Gabrielle = Threat area = Carolinas, Virginia
Please let us know how are the weather conditions in your area. Especially as Gabrielle bears down.

Re: Gabrielle = Threat area = Carolinas, Virginia
We arent expecting much here in SE VA. Wind gusts to 35-40 mph and some squalls. Of course im watching for some unexpected intensification but I seriously doubt this will be more than a moderate TS. We may not get TS conditions up here in VA except perhaps on the Virginia Beach oceanfront and near the NC border.

greatest threat appears to be to hat. I do not expect that much for VA... even gusts to 40 may be stretching it for that state.
Probably should expect TS winds starting early tomorrow afternoon (in case anyone is wondering why I have not mentioned the need for TS warnings here or on nwhhc, I do not believe they are needed more than 9-12 hours in advance)

29.92 inches = 1013.2 mb
Therefore, 29.92 / 1013.2 = 30.07 / X
29.92(X) = 30.07 * 1013.2
X = 30466.924 / 29.92
X = 1018.28 mb
Just remember that 29.92 in = 1013.2 mb!

Below was just in Wilmington Forecast text.
"
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
-- Changed Discussion --SWATH OF RAIN FROM GABRIELLE IS NEARING THE 40NM MARK EAST OF CAPE
FEAR...WHILE THE DEEPER CONVECTION IS STILL APPROXIMATELY 70NM
OFFSHORE. THE LEAD BANDS CONTINUE TO DISSIPATE AS THEY RUN INTO THE
DRY AIRMASS IN PLACE ALONG THE COAST. THE COLUMN WILL GRADUALLY
MOISTEN AS THE STORM GETS CLOSER TO THE COAST. SUBSEQUENTLY...ALONG
WITH INCREASING LOW-LEVEL CONVERGENCE THE CHANCES FOR SHRA/TSRA LOOK
GOOD...ESPECIALLY ACROSS COASTAL PORTIONS OF THE CAPE FEAR AREA.
RAINFALL HAS BEEN IMPRESSIVE ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE CIRCULATION AND
IF THE TRACK IS ADJUSTED A NOTCH TO THE WEST WILL NEED TO INCREASE
WINDS...POPS...AND QPF ACROSS THE CAPE FEAR ZONES. WILL MAKE FINAL
GRID ADJUSTMENTS AFTER NHC CONF CALL."

BTW, how do you convert inches to mb?
If you are using a home weather station then most of these have a small switch or button that you press to convert pressure from inches to mb.

Re: Gabrielle = Threat area = Carolinas, Virginia
I was out on Ocean Isle Beach earlier tonight. Completely clear sky, without any noticeable breeze (beyond the usual at the beach).
Well, it was clear when we got out there. By the time we started to leave, I noticed some high cirrus clouds (I think) coming in from the east.

My barometer is dropping also. It's quite unscientific water/vacuum based unit with no actual numbers (mainly a decorative item,) but I can tell the general trend by observing it.

Re: Gabrielle = Threat area = Carolinas, Virginia
Since my last post the barometer has switched directions, and pressure is now rising. The difference is rather significant, too.
