Henri and Philippe are the normal French forms of those names and are on the lists precisely because they are "French" and the idea when the WMO officially took over tropical storm naming was to include names that would be "French" and "Spanish" identified since those are the official languages of many countries around the Caribbean that are affected by Atlantic storms.

If you look at the official pronunciation guide you will see that those names are supposed to be pronounced in the French way (ahn-REE and fee-LEEP) and are not supposed to be said as English "Henry" and "Philip."

Agree with Rita being a bad name (although she hit us pretty hard), but I always liked what a neighbor of mine painted on one of his boards covering his window - he wrote "No, we asked for a Marga-rita." :)

You've GOT to be kidding, right? The Erika spelling is WAYYY better than Erica.
Katia is one of THE BEST NAMES EVER on the list.
Claudette is super-cool.
Humberto? Never mind, #YOLO I kinda do agree that that name is slighty annoying though. It might get to people when you hear this on the news:
"HURRICANE HUMBERTO MAKES IT RAIN CATS AND DOGS IN FLORIDA!"
Lol.

Always thought Sandy was a pretty lame name for such a strong storm. I wish it had occurred later so it could be called Tony, Valerie, or William. Those are all great names.

Also, I'm pretty sure on the first few pages of the Katrina advisories thread somebody said something to the effect of "Katrina is such a pretty name... you can't be so bad, can you? " It was actually kind of eerie.

And I hate that the 2005 Azores Subtropical Storm wasn't named until postseason... if it had been named Tammy, Wilma would have been ALPHA, which would have been perfect. :D The strongest in the Atlantic basin... The Queen! The Alpha Hurricane.

then we wouldn't have had 2005 go from A to Z for first and last storm

Without a doubt the dumbest hurricane name was "Bob". Thank God it was retired after it's first use.

Short lists...

Best - Igor

Worst - Georges & Isaias (Ike's replacement), pronounced ees-ah-EE'-us.

I almost hope we get to the 9th storm this year (Isaias), even though it will mean losing the office hurricane pool for me. ;-) Would be fun to hear the media mispronounce the name...

Geeze Wxman what a horrible name.

I see it mispronounced as a biblical prophet (I know there's no h, but that won't stop them).

Or worse yet, as a current terrorist group.

I remembered Hurricane Hortense in 1996. I absolutely thought that was the worse name ever used by the NHC and still do to this day. I also wasn't crazy about Georges as well.

The SWIO back in the 1980's had some "interesting" storms when they used Malagasy names such as Krisostoma (1986) and Heliotrope (?) in 1976... they were really running out of good names until they started using African names as well. :P

For me at least, the Hawaiian names are generally the coolest, I'm a big fan of Iniki, Ioke, Kika, Iune (on the next CPac list, and also my username on many websites :D)), etc.

Worst would probably be Gonzalo IMO... I just don't see it as being a really "hurricane" name.

Hurricanes are an amazing natural phenomena. While many are spiraling pits of evil that kill people or cause devastation, some are tame and stay clear of land.

I wish for you to :Bcool:

BTW My second/middle name Philippe is used in the ATL, and my first name is also a hurricane but EPAC.
