Anyone here remember when the storm hit? I wasn't born yet when it came by. Must of been terrifying!

I remember Hugo like yesterday. I was in school at Florida State at that time monitoring the storm, and at one time the models showed Hugo making landfall near Jax. But, an Upper Level Low pressure, which at the time was centered near Mobile Bay, changed the steering of Hugo to a more northerly direction, thus turning the storm up to the SC coast, sparring Jax, but unfortunate for the people across the Carolinas.
Yep, the Charlotte metro area received hurricane winds and widspread power outages for a couple of weeks after Hugo hit.

Gramps.
I was 17 and a senior in high school. We had just received our senior rings that night. There was no school the next day so I stayed up late and watched it make landfall.

Hugo was quite a large hurricane prior to landfall on South Carolina. It had hurricane force winds extending up to 140 miles and tropical storm force winds extending up to 260 miles.

I was working in the weather business at the time - I recall that NOAA almost lost one of their P-3's in Hugo when it was east of Puerto Rico...

I've seen some online clips from CNN Hugo coverage. It was a joke compared to today. They only did a couple of half hour specials during the night, but generally kept regular programming. Hugo did not qualify as breaking news for some odd reason

For 1989 standards, that was impressive though.
