Ohio Valley and KY Winter 2014-2015

#1 Postby WeatherGuesser » Sun Jul 20, 2014 10:08 am

Hoping for NOT a repeat of last year, but some of the signs aren't so good.

Seeing some of the same natural indicators as last summer and fall. Leaves changing and falling way too early, certain bug activity. Fokelore stuff which may not mean anything at all.

Quite a few leaves coming off a few different trees. Grass growth has slowed down. Low overnight temps in the 50s and lack of significant rain might be part of it.

Wooley worms out already.

Also, some of the seasonal forecast maps on the Texas threads.

Well, I know the last 4 days or so here in eastern KY were chilly. Highs around 70, with lows in the low to mid 50s!

The one thing I'm curious about is, are the Great Lakes temps still well below average? If they are, what influence could that play in the Ohio Valley region? Colder air being able to make it down, earlier?

Getting closer. Only about a month now before things typically start to change. But oddly enough, late Aug and early Sep can be among the warmest and most uncomfortable. The change usually starts in late Sep to early Oct.

The Texans iz still fussin' about the possibility of a repeat, or worse.

I've got too much to do this winter that I couldn't do last winter.

I prefer to do a lot of my yard work in the winter when the bugs and snakes aren't a problem. Trees are easier to prune while the leaves are off.

My property is so sloped that some places are hard to move around when it's warm and dry. It's completely impossible when covered with snow or ice and when it's muddy during melting. Last winter it never really dried up enough to be safe to walk from November to March. Even going out to get the mail was hazardous on many days.

I don't like cold, but at least I can dress for it. There's nothing I can do when the ground is covered.

If you're into Fairy Tales and crystal ball forecast methods, I've recently seen the term 'Refriger-nation' used.

Cain't believe them Texanz iz still a'droolin' over the prospects for a cold snowy winter. I'd prefer never to see another like the last one or January '10 (Ice Storm).

It disturbs me to see people openly wishing for bad, destructive weather.

Precip is fine and of course everybody needs an appropriate amount, but no one needs an excess of snow or ice.

I've got way too much to do outside this winter (as noted above) and I need an extended mild period sometime in late November to mid December
to be able to make any progress.

Well, we made it down to 46 last week, and they are forecasting 44 tomorrow night! The leaves are already changing here, and the caterpillars have been out like crazy the past few days!

^^ I've only seen a few Wooley Worms (so far) this year, not as many as last year as far as I can remember.

But the webworms in the trees seem like a bumper crop. They're everywhere.

We had our first frost of the season this morning! The low got down to 32.9F on my weather station. Cold! We were about a week or so early compared to "average"

Some 5 years after the big Ice Storm that crippled the area for several days, the last of the big hanging broken branches (aka Widowmakers) on one of the large oak trees in my yard finally came loose and fell to the ground as a result of the high winds from this current storm system.

Let's hope we don't have a repeat this winter.

With the latest Euro and alt GFS run it appears Cincy may get 2 to 4 inches of Snow Sunday night. Interesting start to it's not even winter yet!

As of this morning for WFO PAH:

Temperatures....

AVERAGE MONTHLY: 40.2
DPTR FM NORMAL: -8.6

Although the next couple of days will be warmer, I don't see the average changing much.

We've gotten a couple dustings over the last couple weeks. Lasts until the snow stops, then it all melts off  After a mostly brutal November, this last day of the month I at sitting at 59.3F at 5:40 in the morning. Incredible!

Yeah, but if you look at the Texas thread, they're pretty sure of a return of the bitterness by mid-month.
