More cold that won't happen

:roflmao:

Sure GFS, we go from no freeze after January 8th to a freeze on March 14th.

Yesterday it had temps pushing 90 then... I hate to sound like wxman57 but given recently I think that's more likely.

DFW looks to be on the edge the next two days, but wouldn't be surprised if one of them over performs.

Oh btw their "snow on the ground" has to be at least a half inch because I was confused too. :P

The Polar Plunge for Special Olympics won't be quite as brutal as years past. But that doesn't mean I want to jump into Lake Michigan. :)

Seems like just a few years ago, we were doing a thread on record widespread ice cover on the Great Lakes.

Oh wait .. it was: viewtopic.php?f=22&t=116168&hilit=ice+cover

I have friends that live in Wisconsin. One of them races Harleys on the ice of Lake Michigan and they have had to cancel their whole late season due to nonexistent ice. I've also heard a lot of ice fishing tournaments have been canceled due to no ice.

We will be moving to the Spring thread on Wednesday for the next trimonthly season (M-A-M). This thread will be left open for discussion of reanalysis or summaries of what transpired for DJF only, or if there is an imminent threat of a March freak winter precip (no threat as of today).

If you can't find the spring thread I will link it here on Wednesday

This is absolutely amazing! I really didn't think we'd see this kind of thing in our lifetime. I spent my first 21 years in Cleveland, Ohio (a similar climate to Chi-town) and I can tell you that such a thing occurring is just ... well, I don't have the adjectives to describe the rarity. Kinda helps put this winter in perspective for all of us.

I'd like to think next winter can't be this bad ... LOL ... but I thought that last year at this time and look what happened!!

It's about time. Could have moved there the second week of January. ;-) :layout:

P.S.
Portastorm - I said I'd relinquish control over the Texas thermostat next winter.

What about long range speculation for next winter? I don't care about summer and spring is only slightly more interesting.

Storms already starting to fire SW of DFW and SPC bumps the entire area up a notch and 5% TOR added for areas east of DFW:

You can start a winter 2017-2018 thread and post forecasts, always welcome. We'll sometimes discuss future winter impacts in the other threads too due to current ENSO and stuff. But the rains and severe weather aspects tends to go in the spring thread. 2015 had good traffic despite non winter threads for TX are less active.

Summer thread is usually pretty quiet unless there is tropical impacts but thats well covered in the very active talkin tropics/active cyclones threads which is the meat of this forum

The 6,384-hour panel of the GFS is indicating lots of sub-freezing air for Texas and plenty of snow.

Looks like today has already over performed going from TSTM to slight with a watch possible and our first warning of the day:

I run an in house hacked WRF out to 8,760 hrs, it always shows snow!
