Took a look at the population of this area. It's MEGAPOLIS. Over 313 million has been affected by Hato and it's impressive outflow and currently are. That's like the U.S crammed in one spot in Southern China!

Fortunately HK was not hit by the maximum winds but not so lucky for Zhuhai and Macau. At least 5 fatalities are now confirmed in Macau.

People from the WPAC are so used to typhoons. Videos from Hong Kong and surrounding areas shows people walking around, power still on, and traffic still on. It's just a normal day. In the states, you see mass evacuations...

Storm chasing videos from Hong Kong

According to surface observations, the urban areas in Hong Kong were probably affected by sustained storm-force winds, and some outlying islands were affected by sustained hurricane-force winds. IMO the winds brought by Hato were slightly more violent than that brought by Vicente back in 2012, but still weaker than a lot of typhoons that required hoisting Hurricane Signal No.10 (the highest signal). Of course, the storm surge brought by Hato was much more significant.

Macau and Zhuhai, which are hit by the core, are suffering the most. Most of the area is still suffering from major power failure, and there are now 8 fatalities confirmed in Macau. Hope the people in these two cities are safe.

The HongKong Observatory(HKO) has issued their report on Typhoon Hato (SuperTyphoon on HKO's scale)... As always, HKO's Tropical Cyclone reports have interesting content...
