2017 Cyclones Retirement: New names are: Harold / Idalia / Margot / Nigel

#1 Postby CrazyC83 » Sat Aug 26, 2017 10:48 am

Normally this thread isn't made until later in the season, but...

At this point, it's pretty much a guarantee Harvey will be retired. We'll see what names (if any) join it later in the season, but we at least have to find a new male H name.

Harvey has only done half as much as he's going to, at the most. Easily getting retired.

Otherwise, I don't see any evidence of any other names being deserving of retirement. Lots of time to go though, including all of September.

Don't forget October which has produced noteworthy storms such as Mitch, Matthew, Wilma, etc. I feel this season may produce a classic Western Caribbean monster similar to Wilma in terms of time of year. The season is only half way over and there are still two more of the three peak months to go!

I'm at least 99.9% percent sure that Harvey will be retired next spring. Hopefully this is the only name that gets retired or even considered for retirement this season.

This list is already nearly half retired - yet many of the middle letter names are still originals as well (Maria through Philippe, all potential peak to semi-late season storms at this rate). The original names when it was introduced in 1981:

Arlene - still active
Bret - still active
Cindy - still active
Dennis - retired 2005 (Don)
Emily - still active
Floyd - retired 1999 (Franklin)
Gert - still active
Harvey - presumably retired 2017 (TBA)
Irene - retired 2011 (Irma)
Jose - still active
Katrina - retired 2005 (Katia)
Lenny - retired 1999 (Lee)
Maria - presumably retired 2017 (TBA)
Nate - still active
Ophelia - still active
Philippe - still active
Rita - retired 2005 (Rina)
Stan - retired 2005 (Sean)
Tammy - still active
Vince - still active
Wilma - retired 2005 (Whitney)

To think that - although we have a long way to go - we may have to replace yet another I name as well...

I am seeing Ivy as a replacement of Irma.

Harold?! Come in and replace Harvey! :)

My opinions are mine and SHOULD not be treated as an official source of information. PLEASE see National Hurricane Center, or any other meteorological agencies, for that matter. By the way, I was born and came from Indonesia, which is rarely hit by tropical cyclones, but regardless, I have LOTS of interest in meteorology.

1984 only has 12 original names left. Klaus was retired in 1990, being replaced with Kyle.

The other numbers are correct.

For the WPac, Hato has good chance of going as well. This is actually the first use of "Hato," since it is the replacement name for 2011's Washi.

Hugo, Hernan, Irene, Iris, Inez, Isabel and many others ARE technically eligible

Retirement only means the name cannot be used for 10 years. That's the official rule. The practice, however, is different

WPAC storms rarely get retired. Unlike the Atlantic, the retirement is very strict even with a high death toll and high damage. Alot manages to get through without retirement and that says alot for Hato with billions of people over here.

8 names were retired from 2015-2016 alone. Rare retirements are no longer the case

For Hato, the meteorological department of Macau has claimed that it is the worst typhoon to hit the city since Typhoon Ruby in 1964, so it is very possible for the SMG to make a request IMO.

Hernan hasn't been retired and Irene is from 2011.
Also, I believe they changed the 10 years rule in the 60's. Now, names are retired forever.

Quite clear that Harvey is going to be retired, and Irma probably too.
Suggestions:

Harvey: Harold, Hank, Harry, Harrison, Hans, Herb, Herbert, Hamish, Hal, Harper
Irma: Ivy, Ina, Ilsa, Inga, Indira, Ilene, Irina, Isabella, Imogene, Iara, Iola, Ivana, Isa, ...maybe Iva is back.

In Asia, I believe Hato has a good shot, but I won't dare suggest a replacement :D

If I picked replaced names, I would pick Hans and Imogene.
